JOB SUMMARY

The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and processing all instrumentation and patient use items.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

High School diploma or equivalent preferred. Certification within two years of hire required.

EXPERIENCE

Previous experience preferred.

SKILLS

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The Sterile Processing tech will have the knowledge and rationale for the utilization of the equipment. This includes sterilizers for pre-vac steam, low temperature hydrogen peroxide sterilizer (VPRO), sonic cleaner, biological readers, and washers. Follow all policies for cleaning and disinfecting equipment in the decontamination area with appropriate use of personal protective equipment. Properly rotate inventory and will use the set PAR-levels as a guide for stocking the department. He/she will also assist with ordering implants and supplies to keep levels up to PAR level as established by the Materials Specialist. Will be able to communicate well with other departments, including requests and follow-up if necessary. Will have knowledge and rationale of using the physician preference cards and for utilizing the case cart system. Will consistently utilize Sterile Processing Microsystem (SPM) and follow the tray recipe and instrument count sheets for proper instrument tray assembly and for sterilization. Will follow all policies in performing biological testing for steam and low temperature hydrogen peroxide sterilization and maintain proper documentation within SPM. Will perform and maintain proper documentation within SPM of all daily checks of equipment in the Sterile Processing Department and the sub-sterile core. Will know and utilize appropriate wrapping techniques using disposable non-woven wrap and paper/plastic peel packing for instrumentation. Will participate in departmental in-services. Will be required to take call on a rotating schedule to cover closed department hours as determined by the OR department leadership. Assist in training new staff members as well as those employees rotating through the department for house-wide orientation. Assist in the cleaning and disinfecting procedures for all endoscopy equipment as needed. Ensure that rounds are completed daily and instruments are cleaned and restocked per procedure in all patient care areas. Will be extremely conscientious in the inspection and inventory of all loaner and consignment trays and instruments before and after usage. Will have a basic knowledge of medical terminology. Will have knowledge and follow all daily, weekly and monthly departmental cleaning procedures, including the cleaning of all sterilizers. Will have knowledge of utilizing one source for instructions for use for all instrumentation and equipment used in the facility. Will attend an online course to obtain sterile processing professional certification within two years of hire and maintain certification throughout employment.
