WUWM, Milwaukee’s NPR, is excited to announce the search for a new Vice President of Content. WUWM inspires, connects, and engages the Milwaukee community through storytelling that reflects the diverse perspectives of our city and region. Celebrating 60 years of public service, WUWM 89.7 Milwaukee’s NPR is southeast Wisconsin’s leading public radio station, reaching over 100,000 people a week through our broadcast signal. Our content reaches an additional 200,000 people per month through non-broadcast channels. Headquartered in Milwaukee, WI, our signal reaches 13 counties in Southeast Wisconsin, from Sheboygan in the north to Madison in the west and Gurnee, IL in the south.

THE POSITION The Vice President of Content will play a key role in this pivotal moment for WUWM and public media as we evolve from a legacy public radio station into a dynamic, multi-platform public media organization. As the station’s top news executive, this role will lead a mission-driven content team to deepen editorial integrity and grow community-informed journalism, while expanding the scope and impact of local content. The successful candidate will balance traditional broadcast with digital, on-demand, and non-broadcast platforms to attract and engage the next generation of listeners. The role requires ensuring journalism and storytelling remain independent, community-informed, and locally rooted while helping shape a content strategy that reflects the richness and diversity of life in southeast Wisconsin. Reporting to the President/General Manager, the VP of Content leads the strategy to achieve the mission and vision of WUWM. The VP will supervise an award-winning content team (including the newsroom and Lake Effect) and support programming, on-air hosting, and scheduling of national programming alongside local storytelling to sustain and grow the audience.

EDITORIAL AND CREATIVE DIRECTION
Editorial excellence that reflects the station’s values of trust, integrity, public service, and care for community. Development of original content and initiatives that resonate locally. A culture of experimentation, especially in digital-first and cross-platform storytelling. Talent development to elevate the station’s voice, sound, and brand. Community connection through culturally relevant, inclusive storytelling.
PROGRAMMING AND OPERATIONS
Sound strategy execution with emphasis on editorial quality, scheduling, and cross-platform consistency. Audience service and flow that maximizes retention and grows new audiences. Partnership management to build relationships with NPR, PRX, APM, and other content partners. Editorial standards and compliance, including FCC rules and journalistic ethics. Operational efficiency in staffing, budgets, and systems to support sustainable growth and innovation.
QUALIFICATIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS The VP will supervise the content team as they develop content for distribution across radio broadcasts, digital channels, and other platforms. The candidate should combine organizational strategy and visionary skills with day-to-day management of station programming and personnel. An ideal candidate is excited about leading a 60-year-old public radio station toward community-engaged, digital-forward public media. The person should be a proven coach and collaborator with experience training staff to develop radio and audio content that can cross over into digital and social platforms. We are looking for someone who brings joy to the work, leads with curiosity, encourages fun, and isn’t afraid to embrace a little whimsy in meaningful storytelling.
Key Job Responsibilities:
Exercises supervisory authority over at least 2.0 FTE employees, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, and other related duties
Maintains policies and practices to protect the credibility of the unit and the editorial integrity of broadcast talent and reporters
Creates and maintains cooperative relationships with internal and external stakeholders, public agencies, and national industry organizations
Determines and maintains appropriate quality and editorial standards for broadcast content, including adherence to FCC regulations
Develops and administers the annual programming budget, including approval and tracking of expenditures
Evaluates, acquires, and optimizes content for multiple media platforms, collaborating cross-departmentally
Implements strategic planning initiatives and aligns resources with the strategic plan; advises on the overall direction of service
Compensation: Salary range: $95,000 – $110,000
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree
Minimum of 5 years of full-time experience in managing/overseeing news and information creation and distribution
Minimum of 3 years in a supervisory role
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Background in broadcast journalism
Experience developing and implementing mission-driven strategy for a news/content team
Experience at a public radio news-formatted station integrated with the NPR network
Experience tracking and integrating audience data into coverage development
Proven ability to grow audiences through multiplatform distribution
Experience in audio/video production and ability to represent the station for fund drives or on-air hosting
Experience leading organizational change and engaging stakeholders in planning and implementing new processes
