The Medical Services work unit exists to promote and protect the health of patients by overseeing, providing, and coordinating all medically related care and clinical analyses necessary for the proper evaluation and treatment of the hospitals patients and by managing the infection control, employee health, and emergency response programs for the hospital. This position is dedicated to facilitating laboratory specimen center operations and the collection of human blood specimens. Responsibilities include obtaining high-quality blood samples via phlebotomy, transporting other specimen types collected by the patient team staff, and ensuring accurate processing and accessioning of specimens within designated deadlines for pick-up. This position also conducts Laboratory Operations Support and Administrative Functions. Duties include: Specimen Collection
Collect quality blood specimens from mentally ill patients and facility staff through venipuncture and capillary finger sticks with minimal to no trauma to the draw site during morning rounds, using proper phlebotomy techniques and infection control practices. Utilize critical thinking and sound judgment to troubleshoot challenges, ensuring specimen integrity and dependable laboratory outcomes. Educate patient team staff on proper specimen collection and storage conditions when necessary. Collaborate with fellow laboratory staff to distribute tasks, address challenges, and exchange information to enhance phlebotomy and specimen processing procedures. Maintain awareness of environmental safety hazards, including those related to working with mentally ill patients. Specimen Processing/Data Entry/Lab Result Follow-Up
Independently prepare specimens for dispatch to the referral laboratory by processing them according to referral criteria (centrifuging, separating serum/plasma, completing requisitions, packaging, storing, and coordinating transport). Utilize reporting systems (Quest Quanum, BEHR, third-party referral laboratories, and paper systems) to generate labels, requests, and reports, receive and report final results, and manage critical values. Enter data into laboratory systems to generate service codes, processing instructions, accessioning information, labels, packing slips, and related items. Generate packing lists for send-out testing and hospital laboratory tracking. Verify accurate entry of patient information and test data into the EHR for stakeholders including billing and patient accounts. Exercise judgment in specimen processing techniques and seek guidance for complex situations. Handle hardcopy lab reports and distribute to relevant parties in a timely manner. Laboratory Operations & Admin Support
Perform proper cleaning procedures after each shift and regular deeper cleaning as scheduled. Check and maintain inventory in the phlebotomist draw kit to ensure supplies are within expiration dates and stocked for rounds. Assist with tracking reports to ensure result receipt and assist with maintaining hospital laboratory inventory and replenishing supplies. Maintain necessary log entries (e.g., temperatures) and check inventory levels, placing orders as needed. Maintain supplies for operations and request additional supplies from the work unit administrative assistant when needed. Answer phones and respond to visitors at internal and external doors as needed. Provide backup to clinic staff and assist Sterile Processing / Central Medical Supply with inventory and instrument processing. Maintain a clean and professional appearance of the Medical Services area. Handle mail pickup and drop-off. Other Duties as Assigned
Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission of the work unit. Minimum Qualifications
Two (2) years of relevant experience in Phlebotomy. OR A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position equal to two (2) years. Special Qualifications
Phlebotomy Certification - ASCP or AMT or ASPT or suitable certification per Agency discretion. Preferred Qualifications

The successful candidate must be willing and able to submit to the following conditions: Must have Phlebotomy certification Must be 21 years of age or older Eligible to be on-call Must be able to work early morning shifts Full Background checks including name, TRAILS, drug screen and fingerprinting Regular exposure to potentially infectious material/blood-borne pathogens Essential Services Designation required to report without delay to provide essential or emergency services Former State employees with prior disciplinary termination or resignation must disclose information and may be disqualified unless extraordinary circumstances exist Appeal Rights
