Responsibilities

This position will provide direct patient care services and medical management of infants under the age of 2 in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Duke University Hospital (DUH), under supervision of a Neonatologist. Responsibilities include seeing patients in level 4 and level 2 NICUs affiliated with DUHS; performing physical exams, collecting and interpreting patient data, presenting on rounds, generating assessments and care plans, implementing diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, collaborating with consulting services, counseling families, and prescribing medications, nutrition, and therapies in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. Other tasks include delivery room attendance, participation in neonatal resuscitation, performing common neonatal procedures, ventilator management with respiratory therapists, regular care meetings, transitions in care and discharge planning with NICU support staff, trainees, and physicians. Round daily with the attending physician and fellows to assess, diagnose, plan treatment, set priorities, and evaluate care effectiveness and cost efficiency. Provide and coordinate clinical care for service-specific patients per protocols and unit guidelines under supervision of the attending physician. Collaborate with fellows, residents, attendings, APPs, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, social workers, and patient care managers to formulate treatment plans and monitor progress. Work with NICU APP team members on workflow, documentation, handoff, and communication in the NICU. Attend daily NICU huddles and weekly care progression and discharge planning meetings. Work with the medical director and APP team leads to understand standard NICU protocols and workflows. Perform procedures within approved scope of practice and credentialing. Assess changes in patient status, escalate concerns, and initiate emergency interventions as needed. Manage post-procedural stabilization and care for patients returning to the NICU after surgery or procedures. Assist bedside surgeries in the NICU with multidisciplinary teams. Contribute to developing care pathways, protocols, and guidelines with the health care team. Communicate pertinent patient information verbally and in writing to supervising physicians, nursing staff, and other providers. Document all relevant data in medical records, including diagnostics, labs, patient status, responses to therapies, and communications. Prescribe and administer drugs and necessary medical devices as permitted (including controlled substances per authority). Provide daily handoffs to oncoming attending, APP, or fellow/resident at shift end. Assess educational needs of patients/families and provide culturally sensitive education; document education in medical records. Maintain licensure and professional certifications. Qualifications and Eligibility

Education

MD or DO from an accredited medical school; completion of Pediatrics, Family Practice, or Medicine-Pediatrics residency. Licensure

Unrestricted medical license issued by NCMB; federal and state prescriptive authority (DEA). Certification

ABP or ABFM board-eligible or board-certified; BLS, NRP mandatory before hire. Experience

Early-career candidates or recent graduates in Pediatric, Med-Peds, or Family Medicine residency seeking NICU experience encouraged to apply. Job Hours
