Responsibilities and expectations

Provide nursing care to psychiatric inpatients, following the Professional Model of Care and within the legal scope of practice and organizational policies. Demonstrate clinical skills with complex patients reflecting analysis of patient status and appropriate interventions. Prioritize care, plan, and document within identified timeframes; ensure accurate handoffs and effective communication with the care team. Collaborate with the healthcare team and participate in change initiatives; maintain professional relationships with ancillary staff. Escalate issues using the chain of command as needed; model empathy, safety, and patient advocacy.

Minimum qualifications

Education: BSN (preferred). Registered Nurse in DC; license in DC, Maryland, or Virginia depending on location of practice (Required). Experience: 1 year RN experience (Required). Orientation: Successfully complete hospital and nursing orientation at Children’s National. Licenses/Certifications: CPR; current RN license in applicable jurisdiction.

Maintain regulatory requirements (license, BLS) and pursue mandatory education and professional activities. Use patient and family data to inform care plans; ensure timely data collection and documentation. Demonstrate clinical skills with complex patients and adapt to changing needs; ensure high standards of practice and discharge planning. Document thoroughly; maintain patient and family education throughout stay.
