Senior Audiologist

Overview

The Senior Audiologist will evaluate auditory function of patients, provide rehabilitation, refer patients to appropriate clinics, and counsel patients on hearing conservation and/or hearing loss. The role includes training medical and audiology students and non-medical staff, and managing the Newborn Hearing Screening Program and its staff. The position requires collaboration with related services to ensure continuity of patient care and adherence to hospital standards.

Essential Responsibilities / Duties

Evaluate auditory function using standard pure tone and speech tests, diagnostic audiologic tests; immittance tests, site of lesion tests, and auditory brainstem response (ABR) audiometry.

Evaluate vestibular system with electronystagmography (ENG) procedures.

Perform advanced electrophysiologic measures to evaluate hearing, balance, and auditory processing disorders.

Independently provide direct clinical services to patients with hearing, balance, and related ear problems.

Counsel patients regarding test results and review options that best meet their hearing care needs; review pricing and sale of hearing aids as part of patient education.

Interpret results and coordinate with medical and educational information to determine diagnoses and treatment courses.

Communicate diagnostic test results, diagnoses, and proposed treatments clearly to otologists; refer appropriately to otologists.

Provide hearing aid evaluations, counseling, and referrals; prescribe, fit, and evaluate hearing aids and other devices.

Provide follow-up consultations after hearing aids are fitted to ensure optimal amplification; document each audiologic visit with diagnosis, instructions, therapies, and follow-ups.

Manage the Newborn Hearing Screening Program and the Program’s staff members; submit data as required by the state of Massachusetts for the Newborn Hearing Screening Program.

Provide in-service training for medical and audiology students and non-medical staff.

Maintain clinic materials and equipment, including periodic calibration checks, motor repairs and adjustments.

Assist with coordinating audiological services and activities in neighborhood health centers, schools, and appropriate agencies.

Perform Performance Improvement assignments as required.

May conduct research on types of—and treatment for—hearing, balance, and related disorders; contribute to design and development of equipment or techniques for diagnosing and treating these disorders.

Interact with related services (e.g., speech-language pathology, pediatrics, neonatology) to ensure continuity of patient care.

Adhere to hospital behavioral standards and infection control and safety procedures.

Perform other duties as needed.

Job Requirements

Required Education and Experience

Requires a doctoral degree from an accredited program in audiology or a related field.

Minimum 2 years post-doctorate clinical audiology experience required (hearing aid dispensing background preferred).

Preferred Education and Experience

Hearing aid dispensing background preferred.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations Required

Certificate of clinical competence in Audiology (ASHA) and a current Audiologist license issued by the Massachusetts board.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of theories, principles and practices of audiology, audiometry, medical terminology, counseling, and related fields.

Ability to coach and train medical and non-medical personnel in audiology; plan, coordinate, and evaluate work.

Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain harmonious relationships.

Strong reading, writing, and communication abilities.

Proficiency with standard Microsoft Office programs and web browsers.
