The Vice President of State and Local Tax (SALT) will lead the strategic direction and execution of all state and local tax matters, including income, franchise, and indirect taxes. This executive role will oversee audit controversy, tax planning, technical analysis, and risk management across multiple jurisdictions. The VP will serve as a key advisor to senior leadership, ensuring compliance, minimizing tax exposure, and supporting business initiatives with sound tax strategies.
Job Responsibilities:
Act as a strategic advisor to senior leadership on SALT matters impacting business operations and growth. Collaborate with finance, legal, and operational teams to align tax strategies with corporate objectives. Represent the company in industry forums and regulatory discussions. Audit Controversy & Risk Management
Lead all aspects of multi-state income and indirect tax audits, including strategy, documentation, negotiations, and settlements. Oversee responses to audit inquiries, manage appeals and protests, and evaluate voluntary disclosure opportunities. Collaborate with internal and external advisors to mitigate risk and resolve complex tax issues. Provide regular updates to executive leadership on audit status, potential exposures, and forecasted liabilities. Tax Planning & Technical Leadership
Partner with planning, compliance, and reporting teams to evaluate and document tax positions related to new products, legislation, and M&A activity. Ensure technical positions are audit-ready and supported by robust documentation. Lead the development and implementation of SALT policies, controls, and governance frameworks. Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and assess their impact on the business. Team Leadership & Development:
Communicate senior management strategic visions to staff. Proactively manage team performance, productivity, and wellbeing, prioritizing resources effectively. Maintain a high-performance culture by ensuring skills sets and competencies are developed through feedback and development opportunities. Review and approve the team's goals and objectives. Model and drive department agility through a culture of continuous process improvement and change management. Encourage collaboration and productive relationships across teams. Work Experience
12+ years of progressive experience in state and local tax, including audit controversy and technical planning. Background in both income and indirect tax. Experience in the media and entertainment industry Education, Professional Training, Technical Training or Certification
CPA or LLM required; advanced degree (JD, MBA, MST) preferred. Familiarity with ERP systems (Oracle, PeopleSoft, SAP), tax software (OneSource), and research tools (BNA, CCH). Knowledge/Skills
Strategic mindset with a focus on compliance, efficiency, and innovation. Experience with ASC 740 and tax provision processes. Proven leadership in managing multi-jurisdictional audits and negotiating settlements. Deep expertise in state tax law, regulations, and case law, with the ability to apply to complex business scenarios. Strong writing and communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical positions clearly. Ability to lead and collaborate across global teams. Warner Bros. Base pay is just one component of Warner Bros. Discovery's total compensation package for employees. Pay Range: $203,770.00 - $378,430.00 salary per year. Other rewards may include annual bonuses, short- and long-term incentives, and program-specific awards. In addition, Warner Bros.
