EM, Neurosurgery & Surgery Physician Assistant-13500-018
Under the supervision of a licensed physician, evaluates and treats patients having medical and/or surgical problems. Performs routine history and physical examinations; performs and/or interprets diagnostic tests and/or procedures in conjunction with physicians. Delivers direct patient care.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the licensed physician, performs complete patient history and physical examinations; orders laboratory tests and X-rays; performs and/or interprets laboratory and test results and initiates treatment; may perform routine or emergency procedures including but not limited to irrigation and suturing of wounds or incisions, drainage of abscesses, insertion of nasogastric tubes and intravenous lines, sampling of arterial blood, etc. Writes appropriately authorized prescriptions; may prescribe controlled substances under appropriate physician countersignature.
Assist with STICU/SDU/Trauma floor coverage including direct patient care, writing daily orders, and transport of critically-ill patients.
Assist at the bedside, and possibly the operating room, with surgical critical care procedures, including central venous catheter placement, arterial line insertion, thoracostomy tube placement, tracheostomy creation, and PEG insertion, as well as additional procedures at the discretion of the Director of Service.
Assume an integral role in reducing overall nosocomial infections, including CLABSI, CAUTI, and SSI; participate in daily Quality Improvement projects with documentation and charting.
Perform other related duties including working on Colon Bundle, removal of Foley catheters, removal of lines in a timely fashion, evaluation of line sites, use of VAC machines, and Biogram evaluation in conjunction with antibiotic stewardship.
May initiate or participate in initial management and stabilization of patients with multiple trauma or cardiopulmonary arrest under the general supervision of the physician in charge in specific emergent circumstances.
Performs daily patient rounds; confers with attending physicians, fellows, residents, nursing staff, etc., to ensure delivery of optimum quality of patient care; may participate in special projects and prepare QA data for review.
Performs other duties pursuant to clinical responsibility such as arranging follow-up, recalling patients for further evaluation, and providing discharge instructions; may note discharge summaries, prescriptions, and referrals on patient charts.
Completes and documents continuing medical education required for physician assistants to meet certification requirements (including assigned lectures and conferences).
Performs related duties as required professionally or at the request of the supervising physician and/or Director of Service.
Performs administrative duties including daily volume and quality indicators, morbidity and mortality documentation, and development of Performance Improvement conferences.
Serves as an integral team member of the ACGME Surgical Critical Care Fellowship program.
Qualifications
Completion of NYS approved program for training of physician assistants to acquire knowledge of anatomy, physiology and clinical patient care (usually via Bachelor of Science program/degree in closely related field).
Registration required with New York State as Physician Assistant.
NYS license as a Physician Assistant required.
Certification with National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (or equivalent) mandatory.
Certification may require American Heart Association or equivalent organization for Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS).
High level of analytical ability to effectively and expeditiously diagnose and treat medical/surgical problems under the direction of a physician.
High degree of responsibility for daily contacts with patients and their families.
Manual dexterity for handling surgical instruments and medical equipment; physical strength for lifting and positioning patients.

Compensation The Mount Sinai Health System provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $66.89 - $88.64 hourly. Actual salaries depend on experience, education, and operational need. This range does not include bonuses, differential pay, or other forms of compensation or benefits.
