Overview We have an opening for a
Senior Network Engineer
to provide advanced level engineering in the areas of network design, configuration, and management considering emerging technologies, best practices, and industry standards. You will articulate advanced networking concepts to programmatic management and systems architects to collaboratively design a cohesive, structured, and secured network environment. The position is in the Livermore Computing (LC) Division’s Network and Security Operations Group within the Computing Directorate.
Business needs require that this position have an on-site presence multiple days a week. Telecommuting options will be limited.
Responsibilities
Provide SME-level knowledge in configuring and troubleshooting VLANs, routing protocols, software defined networks (SDN), policy-based routing, spanning tree protocol, and firewalls in large, complex networks, network services, enterprise services and applications relating to network technologies.
Architect and implement complex HPC datacenter networks, utilizing modern networking overlay technologies including EVPN, VXLan, Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI), etc.
Design and implement enterprise-class network infrastructure based on technology from Cisco, Arista, Palo Alto Networks, F5, and other related network technologies.
Provide advanced network troubleshooting and advanced operational support in Linux environments, network security, as well as support for edge, core, distribution, and access layers of the network.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities (SES.4 level)
Develop innovative solutions that will lead to a cohesive, structured, and secured network environment in collaboration with team members.
Define network requirements and solutions to meet customer needs while interfacing with LLNL customers.
Qualifications
This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or Information Systems or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Advanced ability to troubleshoot infrastructure capacity/performance problems and provide proposed solutions.
Significant experience configuring and managing a medium to large datacenter and enterprise networks in LAN & WAN environments, including significant experience troubleshooting complex issues within those environments.
Significant experience supporting secure, highly reliable enterprise networks with comprehensive knowledge of L2/L3 network principles and routing protocols, and experience designing, configuring, operating, monitoring, and management of switches and routers or equivalent network equipment.
Advanced knowledge of the standards governing TCP/IP and Ethernet.
Advanced written and verbal communication skills to prepare, present, document, and explain technical information, effective interpersonal skills, and the ability to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team environment and to interact with all levels of management and staff.
Ability to support occasional schedule-driven project deliverables and off-hours infrastructure upgrades with the ability to participate in after-hours on-call rotation.
Additional Qualifications (SES.4 level)
Demonstrated ability to make sound technical decisions in high-pressure or complex scenarios, including the ability to troubleshoot highly complex infrastructure capacity / performance problems and provide advanced solutions.
Substantial experience designing and operating Data Center infrastructure and leading significant network improvement or deployment projects.
Expert-level skill and knowledge of networks and network-based security technologies.
Desirable Qualifications
Advanced knowledge of computer science fundamentals in algorithms and data structures and / or computer networking fundamentals, including proficiency in one or more scripting languages, such as Python, Perl.
Experience configuring and managing HPC networks, and experience troubleshooting networks, services, and systems within an HPC environment.
Position Information This is a Career Indefinite position, open to Lab employees and external candidates.
Benefits and Compliance
Pay Range: $168,780 - $214,032 annually for SES.3; $202,500 - $256,824 annually for SES.4.
Security Clearance: Active DOE Q-level or Top Secret clearance at time of hire.
Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicants selected must pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
