The Office of Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) provides guidance and services to promote health, safety, and environmental stewardship. Position Summary The Senior Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) provides direct safety and health services with emphasis on industrial hygiene practices, especially anticipation, recognition, and control of health hazards. The Senior CIH will supervise a team of IH and safety specialists. Services are provided to campus partners and may be extended to other UC locations and the UC Office of the President.
Responsibilities
Serve as subject matter expert in Industrial Hygiene and develop complex solutions across multiple disciplines.
Modify programs to reflect changes in laws, regulations, and other factors.
Advise clients on industrial hygiene requirements for proposed work and facilities.
Ensure implementation of quality control procedures in subject areas and maintain manuals and procedures.
Perform peer reviews of reports and written programs; participate on committees and work groups.
Represent senior management to campus, system-wide, local and state/federal authorities; provide input to regulators.
Maintain professional knowledge of EH&S regulations and provide consultation on various issues (Sanitation, Hearing Conservation, Respiratory Protection, Controlled Substances, Biosafety, etc.).
Complete and maintain required training; monitor program compliance through subordinate staff.
In addition, the role includes supervision of IH staff and student employees, development of work processes to meet standards, and training to ensure regulatory compliance and client satisfaction.
Other Duties
Provide IH services for emergency indoor air quality calls and support to large or hazardous chemical spills on a rotating basis.
May supervise additional team members as needed.
Be available for campus disaster response as Safety Officer in the campus EOC when required; may serve in the Dedicated Urgent Response Team (DURT) with required qualifications.
Required Qualifications
Three years of professional experience and/or equivalent as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
Advanced knowledge across EH&S fields and familiarity with applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
Strong understanding of sanitation issues, public health programs, and implementation of regulatory standards.
Ability to interpret technical regulations governing sanitation, carcinogens and controlled substances; strong analytical and organizational skills.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to work in a complex, political environment and represent the organization to authorities and stakeholders.
Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree in Microbiology, Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Environmental Health or similar field.
Governing Laws and Regulations
Title 8 California Code of Regulations.
California Fire Code provisions related to laboratory safety.
California Retail Food Code.
NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules.
CDC Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories.
Salary & Benefits The annual salary range is $101,600.00 – $150,000.00, commensurate with experience. This is an exempt monthly-paid position. The University’s benefits package information is available on the Compensation & Benefits site.
