GENERAL SUMMARY: The Registered Professional Nurse, Level II, uses critical thinking skills, professional judgement and leadership to anticipate, plan, direct and evaluate the care of the patients provided by a team of ancillary personnel, and serves as a resource in a specific specialty area.

These duties are to be performed in a highly confidential manner, in accordance with the mission, values and behaviors of Insight Hospital and Medical Center. Employees are further expected to provide a high quality of care, service, and kindness toward all patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and guests.

DESCRIPTION:

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Uses the nursing process, critical thinking skills, professional judgment, and the attributes of Careful Nursing to provide care for an assigned population of patients.
  • Assesses patient needs to determine care requirements.
  • Plans care and delegates tasks to ancillary personnel based on patient assessment.
  • Evaluates patient response to care provided and makes changes in plan for care as needed.
  • Promotes patient/family independence through provision of education related to patient's condition, treatment, medications and on-going self-care requirements
  • Participates in the professional advancement system by meeting all the requirements for Level I as well as the following:
  • Demonstrates critical thinking and problem-solving skills independently.
  • Synthesizes information and resources to care for complex, higher acuity patients.
  • Completes designated unit specific competencies.
  • Completes at least 16 hours of continuing education, in addition to mandatory in-service requirements, within the last year that is specific to daily clinical practice.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary rounds and facilitates discharge planning and patient education.
  • A Level II nurse must also demonstrate three of the six criteria below:
  • Demonstrates ability to function as charge nurse.
  • Actively participates as a member or co-chair of organizational and/or unit specific committees.
  • Acts as a resource for specific specialty area by providing in-service education, validating competence of peers or unlicensed personnel, and/or precepts new nurses.
  • Provides constructive input for evaluation of unit process and unlicensed personnel.
  • Maintains membership in a professional organization.
  • Participates in volunteer or community outreach.
  • Coordinates discharge planning by identifying discharge needs, implementing/revising and communicating plan in collaboration with the patient/family/significant others.
  • Discusses patient progress, problems and needs with physician and multidisciplinary team members on a regular basis to ensure that goals for discharge are met.
  • Assures high levels of quality of care through compliance with regulatory standards, reference to current research related to patient care outcome and participation in the data collection and analysis process of ongoing quality monitoring.
  • Uses supplies in a cost effective and efficient manner, and works with the management team to make unit supply level adjustments, additions and revisions.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
  • Current RN License in the State of Illinois required.
  • Completion of a Basic Arrhythmia Course within one (1) year of hire in Intensive Care, Telemetry, Labor & Delivery, Stroke Unit, ED required.
  • Completion of NIH Stroke Scale Training Course within one (1) year of hire in Intensive Care, Telemetry, Stroke Unit, ED required.

Skills:

  • Current CPR certification required.
  • ACLS certification preferred, required for critical care and ER.
  • PALS certification required for ER and Pediatrics.
  • NRP certification.

Abilities:

  • Ability to quickly recognize changes in condition and needs of patients.
  • Knowledge of patients’ growth and development needs.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy in carrying out work duties.
