Job Title: Cardiac Sonographer 1 Profession: Cardiac Sonographer Specialty: Cardiac Sonographer Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Tuesday-Saturday Hours per Shift: 10 hours Experience: Minimum of 2 years License: N/A Certifications: BLS, RCS or ARDMS Must-Have: Level 1 Trauma experience Description: The Cardiac Sonographer 1 performs basic to intermediate cardiac ultrasound services and procedures for adult patients. Procedures include transthoracic, transesophageal, and stress tests used to diagnose and assess cardiac abnormalities. General duties include preparing equipment, prepping patients, and explaining procedures. The sonographer reviews images and reports findings. They analyze patient clinical history to identify the purpose of the examination. The role involves framing the clinical question intended to be answered by the examination. The examination may need to be expanded as necessary to provide comprehensive answers to clinical questions. Essential functions of the role include performing advanced cardiac ultrasound procedures utilizing various equipment and techniques. This role requires making necessary measurements for accurate, high-quality results. The sonographer identifies and defines cardiac abnormalities, adjusting techniques as necessary. They correlate invasive and noninvasive cardiac diagnostic test results with cardiac anatomy and function. Assisting physicians in procedure and operating rooms is also part of the role. The sonographer helps in performing echocardiograph studies for complex procedures to decrease risk factors. They prepare patients for procedures and gather clinical history, including cardiac-related physical findings. This information helps adapt imaging techniques for comprehensive and diagnostic echocardiograms. The sonographer records statistics and performs daily maintenance of equipment. They report any malfunctions as appropriate. Acting as a resource to other staff regarding equipment, techniques, and procedures is essential. Collaboration with quality coordinators ensures adherence to quality processes and protocols. The sonographer assists with accreditation activities as delegated. Implementing protocols for new technology and ensuring compliance with echocardiography standards is required. Key success factors include knowledge of complex sonographic principles, instrumentation, and techniques. There is a strong emphasis on knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology. The ability to explain the purpose of echocardiographic examinations and address patients' questions is important. Knowledge of approved clinical protocols for cardiovascular ultrasound examinations is essential. Understanding proper infection control procedures is critical. Knowledge of relevant laws regarding patient confidentiality and privacy is required. Effective communication with healthcare providers, including fellow sonographers, physicians, and nurses, is necessary. The role requires familiarity with medical terminology and skilled utilization of computers and medical equipment.
