Overview
Phlebotomist (Lab Tech) – Part time
Location: Trinity Health Livingston Hospital
Shift: Must be available for a 5:30am start time as needed. Outpatient Lab hours are M-F 7am-6pm and Saturday 7am-12pm; this position will support Inpatient blood draws during early mornings and will be included in weekend and holiday rotation. Minimum requirement is 1 shift per month. Training schedule will be full time for 1-2 weeks.
Responsibilities
- Performs phlebotomy and specimen receipt, processing, specimen distribution, computer order entry and/or requisition completion, and other pre-analytical tasks as required.
- Tracks specimens through available computer functions to ensure accurate and timely routing.
- Ensures complete and accurate patient samples, patient demographics, and diagnosis codes are provided and submitted to the laboratory for testing.
- Performs successful sample collection including venipuncture, capillary puncture, infant heel sticks, and urine collection using proper patient identification and customer service skills.
- Understands laboratory requisitions and locates missing or incomplete information.
- Completes specimen handling and processing, including centrifugation and aliquoting; manages 24-hour urine aliquots and pH adjustment as required by location.
- Follows test cancellation policy and completes follow-up tasks as needed, and locates specimens for add-on testing.
- Maintains minimum supply levels and keeps workstation and section clean.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of phlebotomy, medical assistant or patient care technician training.
- Experience: Previous phlebotomy experience preferred if formal training and certification as a phlebotomist is not obtained.
