Overview

Texas Oncology is looking for a Phlebotomist to join our team! This position will support the North Austin location (12221 Renfert Way Suite 300 Austin, Texas 78758). Typical work week is Monday through Friday with no weekends or major holidays.

Schedule: This position follows a rotating schedule, with typical shifts including 7:45 AM to 4:15 PM, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, or 8:15 AM to 4:45 PM. For those working in Specimen Processing, shifts generally run from 8:45 AM to 5:15 PM, with occasional extensions to 5:30 PM. As the lab grows, an additional shift from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM may be introduced in the future. Flexibility to rotate between these schedules is expected.

What does the Phlebotomist do?

Under direct supervision, is responsible for collecting and processing specimens from patients. Follows quality assurance and safety policies and procedures. Assists with patient flow as needed. Properly identifies patients, draws blood samples and sends to laboratory for analysis. Maintains collection areas and equipment and performs record keeping duties. Works within standard operating procedures and adheres to quality guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Performs phlebotomy and collects appropriate specimens from patients as ordered. Assures pre-authorizations and completes appropriate consent before collection of limited coverage tests.
  • Maintains proper documentation as described by the quality assurance program including accessioning logs, equipment records and checklists.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and ensures that all supplies are viable before using for patient collection.
  • Sends specimens to reference laboratories for testing not performed in house.
  • Processes incoming orders for lab testing.
  • Processes in-house and incoming reports.
  • Updates and files all daily paperwork, lab logs and maintenance logs.
  • Properly identifies and bands patients for blood product transfusion. Processes properly labeled specimens according to local blood bank policy.
  • Operates designated laboratory equipment as directed.
  • Uses equipment effectively, maintains equipment and work area as directed.
  • Performs waived lab testing under CLIA guidelines for personnel. Records lot numbers of all controls, calibrator, and reagents for waived lab tests.
  • Complies with regulatory agency standards and OSHA compliance; universal precautions.
  • Properly disposes of hazardous materials.
  • Maintains a clean working environment and restocks the phlebotomy and laboratory area as needed.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all information related to patients and medical staff.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following background and experience:

  • Level 1: Entry level; no experience required. High school diploma or equivalent. Licensure from an accredited school of phlebotomy recommended. Current state licensure if applicable.
  • Level 2: In addition to Level 1 requirements, three years of experience.
  • Level Sr: In addition to Level 1 and 2 requirements, five or more years of experience.

Work Environment

Exposed to direct contact with patients with potential for exposure to blood/body fluids, chemotherapeutic agents, and infectious agents. Handling glassware, needles, and corrosive chemicals; reasonable accommodations will be offered.
