The Opportunity: Responsible for the efficient and effective collection of plasma from donors by performing venipuncture, monitoring the pheresis process and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

You will report to the Assistant Center Manager.

Responsibilities

  • In compliance with SOPs perform all aspects of the pheresis procedure and plasma collection, including donor set-up, donor monitoring and donor disconnect.
  • In compliance with SOPs and FDA guidelines, perform venipuncture on donors to begin pheresis process.
  • Evaluate vein performance of the donor to identify possible problems; make necessary corrections to expedite donation time and ensure product quality and donor safety. Ensure donation process is efficient and adjust as needed to create a positive donor experience.
  • Educate new donors on the use of therapeutic products made from donated plasma. Explain the screening process, health screening tests, appointment system, donation fees, center policies, proper nutrition and other information relevant to the donor. Answer donor questions timely, accurately and professionally.
  • Maintain alertness to any donor reactions and assist with reactions or notify appropriate staff.
  • Use a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) to record incidents during the pheresis process, such as machine alerts and alarms, volume variances and donor adverse events.
  • Perform calibrations and verify maintenance as outlined in SOPs. Respond to and resolve complex equipment alarms or donor issues.
  • Troubleshoot equipment failures. Create incident documentation, remove and/or replace equipment from service.
  • Monitor donor flow on the donor floor to ensure continuous turnover. Alert Group Leader or Supervisor of donor flow issues.
  • Collect arm samples or whole blood samples from donors for testing.
  • Record donor data accurately in the electronic donor information management system as outlined in SOPs.
  • Understand policies and procedures associated with hyperimmune programs at the center, if applicable.
  • Maintain a clean, efficient work environment and ensure sufficient operating supplies and forms are available as needed. Follow all Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) policies and procedures. Promote safety in all actions. May conduct routine audits of these procedures and documentation.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all personnel, donor and center information.
  • May be cross-trained in other areas to meet business needs. Bilingual skills may be required at the organization’s discretion.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience: Minimum twelve (12) months experience in a medical or health care environment preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions
  • Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, extreme temperatures and blood-borne pathogens
  • Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment in certain areas
  • May be required to work overtime and extended hours to support center operations
