About APA!

Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) is one of Austin’s most dynamic and best-loved nonprofits. The organization leads the no-kill movement nationally and rescues, treats, and adopts out 10,000 homeless dogs and cats each year, providing a safety net for Austin’s at-risk shelter pets. APA! supports other communities in saving homeless animals and is known for its grassroots, community-based animal rescue work.

Position summary

The APA! Medical Clinic works on the cutting edge of shelter medicine. Our veterinary technicians are crucial to our lifesaving programs, providing hands-on care and treatment to the 10,000+ animals who come through our doors each year. This role is responsible for late night/overnight treatment and care to all hospitalized animals under the care of the APA! medical clinic, as well as providing emergency on-call services to APA! fosters, adopters, and animal care teams. The overnight technician also helps monitor the TLAC campus for safety and emergency concerns, including extreme weather-related incidents. This is an independent role that works closely with the veterinary staff, animal program teams, fosters, and adopters.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain proper care of all hospitalized animals during the overnight shift, including monitoring symptoms, documenting changes, and administering scheduled treatments.
  • Work independently with strong veterinary technician decision-making skills.
  • Request and administer prescribed medications within clinic protocols and timelines.
  • Place IV catheters and administer medications IV, SQ, PO, and IM.
  • Follow medical protocols and maintain knowledge of common veterinary technician tasks, terminology, and responsibilities.
  • Communicate professionally with veterinarians and staff.
  • Answer the clinic emergency phone line and provide instructions to fosters and adopters while ensuring excellent customer service.
  • Use and troubleshoot IV pumps and other veterinary equipment.
  • Triage and respond to urgent, critical, and contagious cases.
  • Report declining patients and emergency needs to the veterinary staff immediately.
  • Humane euthanasia as directed by the veterinarian.
  • Dispense storm medications during overnight events.
  • Provide updates to Clinic Adoption and Foster Case Management Coordinators as needed, including potential medical cases.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of APA! medical protocols and procedures.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and sanitary work environment.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all clients and stakeholders.
  • Send a detailed end-of-day report at the end of your shift.
  • Other duties as outlined by the Clinic Manager, Veterinarian, or a designated APA! representative.

Other functions

  • Attend required training sessions and meetings.
  • Maintain open and consistent communication with the Program Manager or designee, supervisor, and colleagues.
  • Adapt to change and perform related duties as assigned.
  • Work in a high-volume, fast-paced, high-stress environment.

Physical requirements

  • Must be able to routinely lift 40-50 pounds.
  • Ability to work around cats and dogs with varying temperaments, including diseased or potentially fractious animals.
  • Comfortable working indoors and outdoors with unpleasant smells, loud noises, and cleaning chemicals.
  • Comfortable witnessing veterinary surgical procedures.

Qualifications

  • 1 year of experience as a veterinary technician, preferably in a customer-facing role.
  • Proficiency in standard veterinary technician skills (handling, restraint, blood draws, diagnostics, skin scrapes, TPR, injections, catheter placement).
  • Basic knowledge of common dog and cat illnesses, injuries, conditions, and diagnostics.
  • Ability to run basic medical tests for dogs and cats.
  • Ability to transcribe veterinarian notes.
  • Ability to work independently with strong decision-making abilities.
  • Current valid driver’s license is desirable for occasional transport needs.

Work environment

  • Uses own transportation to travel and transport as needed.
  • Exposure to odors, noises, bites, scratches, and animal waste.
  • Potential exposure to contagious diseases.
  • Rapid pace with potential hazards including animal waste, disinfectants, and high noise levels.
  • Occasional after-hours or weekend work may be required to support program needs.

Working relationships

This position reports to the Medical Clinic Team Manager or another designated APA! representative.

  • APA! Main - Town Lake Animal Center, 1156 West Cesar Chavez, Austin, TX 78703
  • Hwy 290 Medical Clinic - 4942 W Hwy 290, Austin, TX 78735
  • Occasional travel to offsite locations as needed.

Time commitment

  • Full-time hourly position requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week, primarily overnight (7:00 pm – 5:00 am) shifts; may include on-call time. Overnight shifts include a shift differential.
  • Shift and schedule flexibility required, as the weekly schedule may change.
  • Evenings, weekends, and holidays may be required.
