Job Requirements


Position Summary: Performs venipuncture and collects other specimens for laboratory testing. Label specimen containers accurately, deliver to proper destination in a timely manner and perform order entry duties as required. Must be able to provide and understand the specific communication, developmental and treatment needs of patients ranging in age from neonate-birth to geriatric. Compliance: understands and complies with the Standards of Behavior and department policies, procedures, and regulations.



Minimum Requirements



  • Education: HS Diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of an accredited Phlebotomy Program.

  • Experience: The skill to draw an average of 7 patients per hour within the first 90 days of employment.

  • License/Registration/Certifications: Must be ASCP eligible

Core Job Responsibilities



  • Procurement and distribution of specimens (blood, urine, etc.), computer data entry and operation of computer equipment.

  • Procure and receive specimens for the technical staff; prepare send-out specimens for reference testing.

  • Perform phlebotomy duties and label specimens; ensure proper specimen handling and timely delivery.

  • Read, write and speak English fluently; maintain strict confidentiality of work-related information.

  • Answer incoming calls for the laboratory; monitor phlebotomy supply inventory and rotate supplies as needed.

  • Perform breath alcohol and urine drug screen collections; perform SLED collections.

  • Respond to traumas, code strokes and codes sepsis in the ED; respond to medical alerts and emergencies for inpatient floors.

  • Must be able to work irregular/flexible hours, including holidays; work as a team member; maintain speed and accuracy.

  • Moderate lifting up to 50 pounds; moderate chemical exposure; sensitive touch for locating veins; color vision and hearing requirements.

  • Other duties as assigned.
