Overview
The Medical Technologist Supervisor monitors all aspects of laboratory operations including daily scheduling, performance and productivity, quality and safety standards, and regulatory compliance. This role specifically provides Phlebotomy education and training, curriculum development, supervision, revision, and implementation of the training program. The supervisor serves as the primary liaison between the laboratory and affiliated Phlebotomy educational institutions and oversees the Phlebotomy team while promoting positive guest relations and customer service.
Responsibilities
- Monitor daily team member schedules, job performance, and productivity.
- Oversee quality and safety standards and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Develop, supervise, revise, and implement Phlebotomy training curricula; create initial curriculum and maintain ongoing program updates.
- Coordinate between the laboratory and affiliated Phlebotomy educational institutions.
- Supervise Phlebotomy staff and foster a culture of excellent guest relations and customer service.
- Perform duties of a technical specialist in the Laboratory as needed; ensure testing accuracy and reporting.
- Coordinate test schedules, quality control procedures, troubleshooting, procedure manuals, training, documentation, and inventory control in primary areas of responsibility.
- Communicate effectively with physicians and customers; notify panic values as required.
- Maintain SOPs and implement approved SOP changes; complete required continuing education hours annually.
- Rotate weekends and participate in holiday scheduling as required; on-call availability for emergencies.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire
- Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by ASCP, or CLS by NCA, or AMT, or equivalent ASCP Specialty or Categorical certification.
- Credential maintenance requirements: CE hours as required by the Board of Certification CMP; individuals certified before Jan 1, 2004 may be exempt from CMP.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Continued Employment
- Current MT/MLS (ASCP) or CLS (NCA/AMT) certification or equivalent.
Experience Required
- Minimum of four (4) years of clinical work experience as a Medical Technologist with at least three (3) years in a leadership role (senior/lead level with increased responsibility).

Education/Training Required
- Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (BSCLS) from an accredited program OR a Bachelor's Degree in Biological Science with graduation from an NAACLS-accredited CLS/MT certificate program OR a Biological Science degree with 10+ years of on-the-job training in a hospital lab performing high complexity testing in multiple disciplines. Categorical or generalist certification required. Grandfathering rules may apply as per policy.
Education/Training Preferred
- Master’s Degree in Clinical Lab Science (MSCLS) from an accredited program.
Independent Actions
- Perform procedures per SOP; notify panic values to ordering physicians; resolve testing and QC issues; maintain SOPs; may implement initial SOP changes; complete continuing education hours annually.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Coordinate test schedules, QC procedures, troubleshooting, manuals, training, documentation, and inventory in primary areas.

Additional Position Requirements
- Rotating weekends and holiday scheduling as required.
- On-call availability for emergencies on any shift.
