Adjunct Instructor, Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration

Classification Title: Adjunct Instructor, Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration. FLSA: Non-Exempt. Location: Main Campus. Position Length: Part-Time.

Position Summary

Adjunct Faculty are professional educators who work on a limited basis with the primary responsibility of fulfilling the Texas Southmost College's mission, vision, values, and goals of providing a quality education for all students enrolled at the College. The relationship of the adjunct faculty member to the student is one of leader, teacher, advisor, and facilitator of learning. Adjunct Faculty members are responsible to the College President through a chain of command and accountable to the College's policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Strive for continual improvement of student success by planning an optimal learning environment; providing high-quality instruction and advising; participating in the development of learning outcomes and in the assessment of students as well as of self and applied teaching techniques; and engaging in ongoing professional development.
  • Manage learning environments by ensuring that accurate syllabi are developed that incorporate college, departmental, and instructor requirements; maintaining attendance records, submitting grades, and providing constructive feedback as well as other relevant information to students throughout the semester; and conducting classes punctually and in accordance with the prescribed meeting schedule.
  • Deliver effective instruction by assuming primary responsibility for curriculum development in conjunction with the College's policies and procedures; considering individual differences of students to design and support a range of appropriate learning activities; using the College's digital learning solution to meet course objectives; and communicating clearly to students the expectations concerning the use of the College's digital learning solution and other available technologies.
  • Enhance the student's learning experience by integrating real-life situations to encourage critical thinking, interdisciplinary skills and teamwork; employ methods that develop student understanding of discipline-specific thinking and practices; work with students and employers in occupational settings as required by the discipline.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the College to construct and continually improve measurable learning outcomes, including THECB core curriculum objectives and TSC objectives.
  • Assess student learning by designing assessments that measure growth; sequence learning opportunities; align assessment with learning opportunities.
  • Promote continual improvement by developing and revising curriculum as needed; use student learning outcomes to plan, develop, document, and evaluate teaching activities; participate in institutional effectiveness programs and share best practices with colleagues; participate in instructional, departmental, or institutional research to improve educational effectiveness.
  • Support learning through student engagement by creating a positive classroom atmosphere that encourages active and collaborative learning, student effort, academic challenge, and interaction with faculty.
  • Maintain a learning-centered environment by being available to students during posted office hours; refer students to appropriate support services.
  • Pursue professional development by staying current in academic fields, maintaining required credentials, and engaging in continuing education as dictated by disciplinary standards.
  • Participate collegially in discipline-specific activities for adjunct faculty and accept teaching assignments based on varied schedules to accommodate diverse student needs and external stakeholders, including dual credit courses at other sites as specified by the supervisor.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to diversity and respect for the student population, colleagues, and service area. Attend the workplace regularly and follow a work schedule that may include evenings or weekends.
  • Use interpersonal skills and sound judgment to complete duties between coworkers, supervisors, faculty, staff, students, and the public. Complete required training and professional development sessions sponsored by the College. Support the College's values and strategic goals. Complete duties in compliance with college standards, policies, and guidelines.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of the academic and instructional functions of the College; curriculum development, assessment and revision; and student learning outcomes and assessment strategies.
  • General knowledge of THECB and SACSCOC and ability to work effectively in a team with a customer service focus.
  • Ability to use technology in teaching and learning; establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, college employees, and the public.
  • Effective written and oral communication; problem-solving; and capacity to work independently with minimal direction.
  • Proficiency with technology in teaching and willingness to enhance teaching through technology; ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines; high energy and a sense of humor.

Required Education and Experience

  • Associate's degree or higher in Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of non-teaching work experience in the field. (Must meet the educational requirement above.)

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Teaching experience in a comprehensive community college setting.
  • Experience in integrating varied methods to enhance the learning experience and maintaining a learning-centered environment.
  • Experience collaborating with colleagues to develop measurable learning outcomes.

Certificates and Licenses

  • Texas Certified ACR Technician with EPA Section 608 Universal Certification.
