Ferrous Processing and Trading (FPT) is a leading processor, buyer, seller, and recycler of scrap metals in North America. A wholly-owned subsidiary of Cleveland-Cliffs, FPT offers an immediate opening for a Heavy Equipment Operator on 1st Shift at the FPT Lonyo location in Detroit, MI. The role involves processing scrap metals using various tools and equipment, including crawlers.

Responsibilities

• Ensure safety standards are followed, including PPE use, hazard removal, and site cleanliness.
• Operate and maintain heavy equipment such as wheeled crawlers, pedestal crawlers from manufacturers like Caterpillar, Sennebogen, and Liebherr.
• Operate equipment responding to hand signals or radio commands.
• Load and unload materials using equipment like magnets and grapples.
• Sort recycled materials and metals, separating high-grade metals and removing non-conforming metals.
• Load balers and shredders with grapples or magnets.
• Operate and maintain mobile equipment including forklifts, skid steers, and water trucks.
• Perform physical tasks with hand tools and perform daily equipment inspections.
• Identify scrap types and grades, and manage trailer and container positioning.
• Perform cleaning and assist mechanics with maintenance tasks.
• Interact with customers or drivers as needed.
• Operate other equipment as required.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• High School Diploma/GED or 1+ years of heavy equipment experience.
• Basic reading, writing, and math skills.
• Ability to work independently and communicate effectively.
• Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
• Pre-employment background, physical, and drug screening required.
