Job Description
Position Title: Heavy Equipment Operator
Division: 6
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Education and Experience: Level I – None; Level II – one year of experience operating heavy equipment.
Basic Purpose: Positions in this job family are responsible for operating power equipment and performing related tasks in the maintenance and repair of highways.
Responsibilities
- Operates equipment or heavy machinery such as trucks, tractors, road graders, dozers, front-end loaders, cranes, backhoes, paint machines, semi-trailers, snow removal equipment, and other equipment as needed.
- Performs minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities.
- Repairs failures in roadway shoulders or bridge decks.
- Repairs and/or replaces signs, posts, guardrails and fences.
- Provides traffic control assistance using a stop/slow sign or flag to direct highway traffic.
- Applies herbicide to highway right-of-ways to control weeds and other vegetation.
- Removes debris including tires, animal carcasses, spilled items and other obstacles.
Level Descriptor
- Level I: Basic level; incumbents work under close supervision operating and maintaining power equipment and performing related unskilled and semiskilled tasks in highway construction, maintenance and repair.
- Level II: Career level; incumbents perform skilled work at full performance level in operating heavy equipment used in highway construction or repair and perform routine highway maintenance duties.
Special Requirements
- Possession of a valid Oklahoma driver’s license at time of employment.
- Some agencies may require a valid Oklahoma commercial driver’s license (Class A or B) with appropriate endorsements.
- CDL tank vehicle endorsement may be required for some positions.
- Drug test required prior to appointment.
- Willingness to travel as needed; may work hours other than regular shifts during emergencies; must have a telephone in residence for on-call messages.
- Physical requirements: frequent standing, walking, reaching; occasional sitting; ability to lift up to 80 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally; vision requirements as described.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Knowledge of operation and servicing of heavy equipment used in highway construction and maintenance, materials used, and proper traffic control during maintenance operations. Ability to operate heavy equipment, follow instructions, and communicate effectively.
