Overview
Heavy Equipment Operator I role at Leavenworth USD453. Location: Leavenworth County Shop, 23690 187th Street, Leavenworth, KS. Pay: $21.29–$24.45 per hour, determined by qualifications/experience. Full-time, benefits eligible. Exempt/Non-Exempt: N. Residency policy applies as described by Leavenworth County.
Responsibilities
- Operate light-duty heavy construction equipment (e.g., dump truck, loader, tractor/trailer, small broom, roller, bobcat/skid steer) as part of daily public works operations, maintenance, and construction projects.
- Perform laborer tasks using various hand tools (e.g., shovel, jackhammer, crack sealer, chainsaw, equipment maintenance support) and assist with housekeeping, SWPPP duties, and work area restoration.
- Participate in storm and winter watch on-call duties.
- Assist with safety, traffic management, and equipment inspection as needed.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of general Public Works roadway maintenance and construction activities.
- Knowledge of safety procedures for general labor tasks, heavy equipment operations, and material handling.
- Basic mechanical knowledge to analyze equipment breakdowns and report to supervisor or mechanics.
- Knowledge of basic storm water prevention practices, BMPs, and related reporting duties.
- Skill in operating light-duty heavy equipment and use of hand tools (e.g., chainsaws, rakes, hammers, jackhammers, cutting torches, sandblasting, jacks, augers, compactors).
- Ability to read engineering exhibits, specifications, and standards; follow verbal directions for public works operations.
- Skill in proper flagging/traffic control through work zones.
