Overview

FBI Counterterrorism and Forensic Science Research Unit (CFSRU) Visiting Scientist Program (VSP) at Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. The CFSRU provides technical leadership for the FBI and other law enforcement and intelligence agencies through applied research and development.

Responsibilities

Under the guidance of a mentor, you may participate in forensic research initiatives using state-of-the-art equipment and performing duties that may include:

  • Conducting searches of scientific literature
  • Designing experimental plans
  • Conducting field tests
  • Performing analytical laboratory analyses
  • Analyzing instrumental data and documenting results
  • Preparing and presenting research findings to diverse audiences, orally and in writing

Research areas may include:

  • Human identification
  • Detection of bio-threat agents
  • Detection of explosives and drugs
  • Characterization and comparison of forensic materials
  • Elemental analysis of trace evidence
  • Mass spectrometry applications to chemical and biological analyses, including IRMS
  • Development of instrumental methods
  • Evaluation of field portable instrumentation
  • Advancement of forensic chemistry, specifically in toxicology and trace volatiles
  • Imaging and Visualization techniques

Other activities may include:

  • Literature reviews
  • Designing experimental plans
  • Field testing
  • Analytical laboratory analyses
  • Data analysis and reporting
  • Preparing research findings for publication or review

Qualifications

Participation Eligibility: You must meet the following criteria to participate in the program:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Have completed or be close to completing a bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD within the last 5 years, or be within the start date window for the appointment
  • Undergo an FBI background investigation and meet suitability criteria

A Complete Application Consists Of

Location and Benefits

Location: Quantico, Virginia. Stipend and travel allowances are provided; appointment is full-time during standard business hours with possible extension based on eligibility and availability. This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens.

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not be an employee of ORISE, ORAU, DOE, FBI, or CFSRU; rather, the participant is affiliated with ORISE for appointment administration.
