Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager (NM) and the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN), performs specific duties that support patient care. These duties include direct and indirect patient care activities which are essential to providing comprehensive care to patients. Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the RN, engages in selected tasks and activities as directed to obtain and report information to assist the nurse in the assessment, planning and evaluation of patient needs, treatment and reports deviations as identified to RN.
  • Obtain and record vital signs as ordered and/or delegated by the RN.
  • Under the direction of the RN, perform technical duties and selected treatments, procedures and activities which contribute to safe and efficient delivery of patient care.
  • Ensure patients are accurately identified following established policies and procedures (e.g., doors, ID bands, barcode scanning for lab draws).
  • Assist in the care of patients with consideration for the safety of key populations as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team, offering suggestions on addressing patient/family needs, considering cultural and individual diversity, and demonstrating sensitivity to these aspects of care delivery.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and staff. Cover the Business Associate desk in the absence of the BA under the direction of the NM or designee.
  • Participate in receiving patient bedside report at the beginning of each shift and as needed during the shift.
  • Demonstrate accountability and responsibility in daily performance of role. Relocate and rotate to meet patient care needs.
  • Complete non-therapeutic functions under the direction of MD, PA, APRN or RN. Remove medication(s) from the pneumatic tube system sent from the Pharmacy or Hospital Supply to the unit/patient care area, and deliver the medication(s) to the appropriate licensed practitioner.

Qualifications

Education
High school diploma or GED; and CNA or other educational equivalent (e.g., Medical Assistant, CPCT, EMT, a student nurse from an accredited program or LPN).

Experience
Either (A) Two (2) years relevant direct patient care experience as dictated by placement, or (B) Education as stated above. All candidates must successfully complete the Patient Care Associate Competency Based Training and Practicum and unit specific competencies, including age-specific competencies.

Licensure
CT CNA certification, EMT, a student nurse from an accredited program or an LPN. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) training must be obtained prior to employment or within one (1) month of hire. PCT must maintain BLS at all times during employment. If any training expires, the PCT will be suspended until it is obtained and documented.

Special Skills
Successful completion of orientation. Speak and write English proficiently. Successful completion of orientation/evidence of positive initiatives with patients and staff.

Physical Demands
The employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. They are also required to stand and walk. They must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The work environment is usually moderate in noise.
