Overview
Under the direction of an Environmental Services Supervisor, the Hazardous Waste Technician is responsible for removing all waste streams (trash, biohazardous and chemotherapy waste, soiled linen, recycling, etc.) from the facility to specific collection areas. This position performs a variety of duties that support the department in maintaining a clean environment for patients and staff.
Responsibilities
- Waste and Soiled Linen Removal: Safely remove and transport infectious/non-infectious waste including medical, hazardous, municipal, recycling, and linen from the facility to specified collection areas.
- Waste Removal Scheduling: Follow an appropriate schedule to ensure timeliness of waste and soiled linen removal throughout the facility.
- Site Cleanliness: Maintain cleanliness of the loading dock, trash compactor area, and trash containers.
- Furniture Moving: Move furniture and other items from patient care hallways to maintain proper egress; setup and breakdown of tables and chairs for meetings and events.
- High Touch Surface Disinfection and Cleaning: Properly clean and disinfect all areas including clinical inpatient/outpatient spaces, support areas, offices, labs, conference rooms, elevators, stairwells, and other areas as assigned.
- Medical Waste Handling: Handle and dispose of medical waste and sharps observing all required precautions, including properly tying and labeling bags.
- Safety and Equipment: Use proper chemicals, tools, and equipment; clean spills containing blood or other potentially infectious material using established infection control and safety procedures; observe all safety and infection control requirements (PPE, hand hygiene).
- Regulatory Compliance: Follow departmental and other regulatory standards regarding cleaning policies and procedures (disinfectants, labeling chemical bottles, organized carts, etc.).
- Training and Competencies: Demonstrate competency by completing required departmental education and training.
- Communication: Represent the Environmental Services department positively and professionally; maintain positive relationships and communicate with patients, visitors, staff, and the Environmental Services team; report facilities/maintenance issues to Supervisor.
Qualifications
- Six (6) months experience in healthcare, Environmental Services, customer service, or hospitality.
- Ability to follow basic oral/written instructions in English (for safety in emergencies).
- Completion of a healthcare environmental services training from MacDonald Training Center may be considered in lieu of six months of experience.
