Overview
Lead Geotechnical Engineering, Mine Waste – Tucson, AZ (also considered: Tempe, AZ; Reno, NV; Elko, NV). Lead the civil/geotechnical design and project delivery for mine waste containment (tailings and waste rock) and heap leach facilities as part of the US Mine Waste team. Work with a regional team on challenging mining, heavy civil, and geotechnical projects.
This Opportunity
WSP is seeking a Lead Civil/Geotechnical Engineer to join our US Mine Waste team.
Your Impact
- Lead the civil design of mine waste containment and heap leach facilities, including initial layout, site selection, facility layout, geotechnical and hydrologic analyses, and preparation of design drawings and technical specifications for construction.
- Manage and execute geotechnical projects, including field investigations, laboratory testing programs, data interpretation, and geotechnical analysis.
- Scope, direct, and review complex geotechnical analyses (soil mechanics, stability, seepage, thermal modelling, deposition modelling, run-out analyses for mine waste or water embankment dams and waste rock dumps).
- Independently manage projects to client-approved scopes of work; deliver high-quality reports on time and within budget subject to senior review.
- Contribute to client relationships and business development activities to grow the practice.
- Lead multidisciplinary project teams; support technical proposals and design work packages in response to client needs.
- Manage the work of junior engineers; stay current with geotechnical engineering techniques and practices.
- Collaborate with other engineers and planners on projects with infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded improvements and development.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company resources and conduct; adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and policies.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering or closely related discipline.
- 7–10 years of relevant post-education experience in engineering and geotechnical design.
- Engineering license required.
- Demonstrated experience with tailings management and heap leach facility design in the mining industry; proficiency with commonly used software packages.
- Strong knowledge of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering.
- Client liaison and business development skills; project management experience with small to mid-level projects (scoping, tracking hours and expenses).
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to engage with engineering and non-engineering audiences.
- Self-leadership with attention to detail, multitasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment; ability to work independently and mentor junior team members; adherence to QA/QC.
- Proficiency with design software (MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS) and related tools.
- Strong problem-solving ability and critical thinking; ability to apply technical knowledge to testing results and data analysis.
- Ability to coordinate and direct subcontractors and others to safely and efficiently complete tasks; commitment to workplace safety and compliance with policies.
- Willingness to work flexible schedules and occasional travel as project requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering or closely related field.
- Willingness to work on projects across sectors and perform tasks on short notice.
- Interest in fieldwork and travel (local and national) as needed.
