Join to apply for the Unit Secretary/Assistant role at Beacon Health System. Reports to the Director. Performs receptionist and general clerical duties relating to the general functioning of the patient care unit. Assists with basic patient care activities in support of other associates. Specific tasks to be performed are determined based upon assignment and may include some or all of the duties listed below.

Responsibilities

  • Perform receptionist and clerical duties related to the patient care unit.
  • Assist with basic patient care activities in support of other associates as assigned.
  • Complete other job-related duties and projects as assigned.
  • Contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department.
  • Schedule and manage calls, take messages, and answer inquiries; maintain a professional environment.
  • Clerical/Supply Inventory/Unit Maintenance; monitor and order replacement of stock supplies and materials; keep department areas neat and orderly; manage telephone calls.
  • Obtain and document height, weight, intake and output, vital signs, and report any abnormal findings in a timely manner; collect and deliver specimens as appropriate; assist with answering call lights; provide safe patient environment; assist with patient mobility, ambulation, positioning, and transportation; ensure patients receive the correct diet and assist with feeding as needed; thoroughly document all patient care provided.
  • Respond promptly to patient, family, and staff needs; assist in emergency situations as directed.
  • Participate in shift briefs, debriefs, and huddles to improve communication and teamwork as per TeamSTEPPS principles.

Education And Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Minimum of 17 years of age required.
  • Previous patient care experience preferred. Nurse Assistant certification is preferred.
  • Must obtain Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS/CPR) within 3 months of hire and maintain certification.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Ability to prioritize duties to meet deadlines; legible handwriting and accurate documentation.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written); good working relationships with others.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology; familiarity with EPF, PHS, and Microsoft Office products preferred.
  • Ability to be responsive and adaptable for scheduling needs; strong teamwork and clear communication with supervising nurse.

Working Conditions

  • Able to deal with significant stress and frequent interruptions.
  • Possible eye strain from CRT terminal.

Physical Demands

  • Remain seated for long periods; moderate standing, walking, and stooping; lift up to 20 pounds; use proper body mechanics; physical stamina for daily tasks.

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Attend and participate in department meetings; complete mandatory education and annual competencies; maintain licenses/certifications.
  • Direct patient care providers must maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other required certifications; comply with universal precautions and organizational policies.
  • Available to work overtime or extra shifts when required.
