Job Overview

Since 1967, Helen Keller National Center (HKNC) has been committed to improving the lives of individuals who are DeafBlind or have a combined hearing and vision loss. HKNC is dedicated to working with each person to achieve their goals towards independence, employment, and quality of life. We have an exciting part-time career opportunity for an American Sign Language Interpreter.

Responsibilities

  • Provide on-campus and field interpreting as required.
  • Provide instruction in American Sign Language and Pro-Tactile and/or adaptation to accessible Communication to staff and students.
  • Provide communication training to participants.
  • Provide consumer education related to interpreting issues.
  • Teach and interpret for staff/students outside regular hours, with work hours adjusted accordingly.
  • Maintain daily progress notes and submit reports.
  • Assist in preparing learning aids.
  • Participate in team meetings to address student issues.
  • Share responsibility for equipment and work area appearance.
  • Guide and interpret for participants, staff, and guests, including travel to sites and events.
  • Work flexible hours, including some evenings and overnight stays, with occasional travel.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Passed RID/NAD NIC certification or equivalent training.
  • 2-3 years interpreting experience with DeafBlind or deaf-visually impaired individuals.
  • Must obtain RID/NAD NIC certification within 5 years.
  • Proficiency in communication methods used by DeafBlind individuals.
  • Flexibility with work hours and travel as needed.
