Overview
The job of Instructional Assistant is done for the purpose(s) of working with individual and/or small groups of students under the supervision of a certificated teacher in the supervision and instruction of students; and providing clerical support to teacher/s and staff. Employees in this classification will receive a variety of assignments including classroom support, clerical support, library, lunchroom, health room and playground, etc. The Native American Ed Division is looking for an ideal candidate who is familiar with 574 Federally Recognized Tribes of the USA, understands what Since Time Immemorial is, is familiar with Washington State local tribes, understands that the language of the local tribes is Lushootseed, and can manage 506 Forms, and keep them organized.
Responsibilities
- Administers tests, homework assignments, make-up work, etc. for the purpose of supporting teachers in the instructional process.
- Assists students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments (e.g. read stories, listen to students read, providing writing assistance, reinforce English lessons, provide spelling practice, facilitate activities, computer learning programs, etc.) for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts and assisting students in reaching their academic goals and grade level standards.
- Attends functions as assigned (e.g. meetings, in-service presentations, trainings, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
- Confers with teachers and/or parents as may be required for the purpose of providing input into the evaluation of students' progress and/or implementing/modifying students' objectives.
- Guides students in independent study (e.g. enrichment work, remedial work, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring student success.
- Implements under the supervision of assigned teacher, instructional programs and lesson plans for the purpose of assisting the teacher in improving students academic success through a defined course of study.
- Maintains classroom resources, work area, students files/records (e.g. adapting instructional materials, audio visual equipment, bulletin boards, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of items and/or providing reliable information.
- Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. classroom, playground, field trips, library, lunchroom, bus loading/unloading, etc.) for the purpose of identifying required assistance and ensuring a safe and positive learning environment.
- Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g. copying, correcting papers, completing attendance verifications, taking and recording phone calls, etc.) for the purpose of supporting the teacher and/or in providing necessary records/materials.
- Reports observations and incidents relating to specific students (e.g. accidents, fights, inappropriate social behavior, violations of rules, safety conditions, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate instructional and/or administrative personnel.
- Responds to emergency situations (e.g. injured student, fights, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Supports classroom teachers and other school personnel for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of curriculum and teaching methodologies.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent and at least one of the following: a qualifying score on the Education Testing Service paraeducator assessment as published by PESB; or an associate degree or higher; or seventy-two quarter credits or forty-eight semester credits at the one hundred level or higher; or completed an apprenticeship as a paraeducator.
- Years Of Relevant Experience: One (1) year of related paid work experience.
- Certificates & Licenses: Valid State of Washington Driver's License or evidence of equivalent mobility; Criminal Justice Fingerprint and Background Clearance.
- Knowledge: Basic math (fractions, percents, ratios); ability to read manuals and write documents; understand complex instructions; knowledge of grammar, punctuation, child development and learning styles; age-appropriate activities.
- Skills: Ability to perform multiple tasks, operate standard office equipment, maintain records, and adapt to changing conditions.
- Abilities: Ability to schedule activities, gather data, work with diverse groups, maintain confidentiality, work as part of a team, and handle interruptions; keyboarding and computer use.
Benefits
Seattle Public Schools benefits are administered by the Washington State Healthcare Authority (HCA) under the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB). Eligibility for benefits is determined by the number of hours scheduled to work during the school year (September 1 through August 31). 630 hours or more in a year makes an employee eligible for benefits.
