Job Summary

The Medical Assistant is responsible for providing basic care to patients following established standards and practices.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned, which may include checking schedules and organizing patient flow.
  • Escorting patients to exam/procedure rooms. Observes, records and reports patient observations and reactions to drugs and treatments to providers.
  • Assisting patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.
  • Collecting patient history including current medications, allergies, symptoms, etc.
  • Provide patient care as directed by the provider; this may include screenings, treatments in accordance with established standards.
  • Assisting providers with various procedures as needed.
  • Documents in the Electronic Medical Record and relays information/instructions to patient/family. Documents all interventions, phone calls, patient/family responses, medication dispensed or prescribed, hospital data.
  • Answering patient phone calls and messages, acting as a communication liaison between the patient and provider.
  • Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned which may include filing or sending medical records to a patient or referral provider, appointment scheduling.
  • Collection and handling of lab specimens following established standards and practices. Adhere to infection control safety guidelines, maintaining equipment, instruments, and stock supplies.
  • Utilizes electronic referrals process to complete requested physician referrals to NCHMD specialists and ancillary services.

Education, Experience And Qualifications

  • Minimum of High School or GED required.
  • Completion of Medical Assistant or practical nursing training program with documented clinical practicum hours; OR Medical Assistant certification; OR a minimum of one-year experience performing above duties in a medical office setting or medical capacity.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • Verified ability to take accurate patient vital signs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively articulate and explain required information to patients.
  • Knowledge of CPT and ICD9 codes.
  • Intermediate computer knowledge: Uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows
  • Knowledge of basic and specialty specific medical terminology.
  • Capable of working under pressure in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions while maintaining a professional demeanor and control.
