This position is based in Coachella, CA at Armtec’s production facility for felted fiber nitrocellulose combustible cartridge cases for medium and large caliber ammunition and pyrophoric payloads for training grenades.

Job Summary

Manufacturing Engineers at Armtec Defense Technologies are responsible for directly supporting production operations by continually improving production processes, tools, and equipment to ensure the ability to safely deliver on customer and business commitments. They observe and analyze production systems to identify problems and risks, troubleshoot quality and downtime issues, and identify and implement process and equipment changes to reduce future problems. They improve documentation and specifications for production processes, including operator work loops, troubleshooting and maintenance procedures, and takt-driven process configurations to optimize performance and institutionalize learning.

Our products involve energetic materials, so safety is paramount. We strive to operate a pull-based lean production system with clear operator signals to improve safety and efficiency. Equipment includes electro-mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems that convert nitrocellulose-based slurries into molded parts that are finished.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Improve production processes, tools, and equipment to help achieve productivity targets
  • Track and analyze product and process data to identify opportunities to reduce rejects, downtime, material costs, and labor hours
  • Troubleshoot equipment and tooling problems; implement preventative measures to minimize downtime
  • Collaborate with engineering team to develop pull-system process flows, operator standard work sequences, and load charts using Lean and industrial engineering principles
  • Develop and lead/co-lead Kaizen events with ROIs to remove waste from manufacturing processes
  • Perform time studies and train operators on new processes
  • Design and develop job aids, fixtures, and workstations to improve operator cycles
  • Develop and improve equipment troubleshooting and maintenance procedures and spare parts lists
  • Collaborate with internal customers on technical issues
  • Improve manufacturing efficiency, output, and reduce costs
  • Participate in DFMEAs and PFMEAs as part of the team
  • Stay informed on new technologies, materials, and equipment; investigate potential applications
  • Address safety concerns by updating equipment designs, procedures, and processes
  • Adhere to Armtec’s ethics and business conduct policies

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4-year degree in a relevant Engineering field
  • Strong problem solving and equipment troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to conceptualize, design and/or prototype and implement basic modifications to electro-mechanical systems, process equipment, operator workstations, and job aids
  • Ability to collect and analyze production data to identify trends and correlations for problem resolution
  • Creativity with rapid prototyping and iterative design-test cycles
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
  • Commitment to a safe work environment
  • Dependable, responsible, detail-oriented, with strong interpersonal skills
  • Prefer experience with energetics processing and DoD safety requirements

Education/Previous Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 4-year degree in a relevant Engineering field

Work Hours & Travel

  • 4/10 workweek, Monday through Thursday, with periodic off-hours support as production needs require
