Position: Custodian
Location: Hammond Academy of Science and Technology
Status: Non-exempt Classified
Salary: starting at $17.50/hour

Responsibilities
- Act in a manner that reflects the standards of the School Board and community.
- Be knowledgeable; serve as a goodwill ambassador for the school corporation.
- Look professional and neat.
- Comply with Board policy and the directives of supervisors.
- Follow general cleaning guidelines and perform duties by area:
- Classrooms: Sweep rooms, wash desktops and backs, wash whiteboards, dust window ledges, dust shelves, replace burned out lights, fix desk problems or other tasks as needed.
- Bathrooms: Mop and sanitize floors; clean and sanitize urinals, stools, sinks; wash mirrors and walls; remove graffiti; replace lights, toilet paper, hand towels; check dispensers and reservoirs; perform other related cleaning tasks.
- Halls and locker bays: Clean lockers, sweep and mop, dust cobwebs, wash windows.
- Offices: Vacuum, dust, mop, wash sinks, wash windows, check supply levels.
- Stairwells: Sweep daily, mop as needed, remove cobwebs.
- Open areas and common spaces: Vacuum, dust, clean walls, remove gum, and clean carpets as needed.
- Gym area: Keep floors clean, sweep/mop bleachers, clean and sanitize locker rooms and bathrooms.
- General duties: Clean cafeteria after events and meals; ensure mop heads and vacuum brushes are maintained; keep glass and equipment clean; remove waste; clean up spills as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school Diploma or equivalent and custodial experience. Good moral character and physical/mental ability to perform custodial duties. Strong communication skills; ability to read and understand instructions for tools and cleaning chemicals.
- Education/Experience: High School Diploma or GED and custodial experience.
- Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents; understand instructions and write routine reports and work orders; communicate effectively.
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic arithmetic and compute area, volume, and percentages.
- Reasoning Ability: Ability to prioritize tasks, solve problems, and follow written or oral instructions.
- Other Skills: Ability to operate custodial equipment.
- Physical Demands: May require heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds) and physical activity to access all areas of the building.
- Working Environment/Conditions: Varied settings; noise, temperature fluctuations, cleaning chemicals. Read MSDS and protect yourself when handling chemicals.
