Cheder Menachem is hiring: School Custodian/Handyman in Wilkes-Barre

Overview

We are looking for a responsible custodian to maintain our facilities. The custodian will conduct basic maintenance and janitorial duties as needed.

The ideal candidate will be experienced in a custodian role focused on building upkeep. They will have great physical endurance to cover a large space. A keen eye for detail and diligence are also imperative in custodial maintenance jobs.

Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance, minor repairs and other handyman activities (replacing light bulbs, adjusting furniture, light plumbing etc.).
• Performs routine maintenance to custodial equipment and supplies.
• Empties trash receptacles, disposes trash into dumpsters, and bags trash for proper disposal.
• Open and inspect the premises at the start of each day.
• Close the premises at the end of each day.
• Reports needs, concerns or damages to the building manager, which may include submitting or recommending work orders and checking supply levels.
• Performs general, routine custodial duties, including dusting, sweeping, mopping, cleaning restrooms, and restocking paper and soap supplies.
• Oversee day shift janitorial staff.
• Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
• Shoveling snow from the sidewalk, lifting heavy items, moving chairs/tables etc.
• Assist with unloading and stocking supply deliveries.
• Set up for school events.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

• Ability to understand verbal and written instructions in English.
• Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
• Ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies.
• Ability to lift and manipulate heavy objects.
• Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
• Proven experience as custodian, janitor or in a similar role.
• Knowledge of use and maintenance of industrial cleaning equipment and appliances.
• Familiarity with basic landscaping and handyman practices.
• Attention to detail and conscientiousness.
• Very good physical condition and strength.

Conditions of Employment

• Must have a valid SSN.
• Must have a driver's license and own a vehicle.
• Must obtain PA Criminal Records Check.
• Must obtain Federal Criminal History Record Information. (CHRI)
• Must obtain Child Abuse History Clearance.
• Must obtain National Sex Offender Registry Verification.
• Must have a smartphone for the company app.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of the job.
• The work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

Hours

• Monday-Thursday: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.
• Friday: 8:00 am - 2:00 pm.
