The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking to hire a Public Information Officer IV / Event & Shooting Sports Coordinator for the Office of Strategic Services. This position will: develop outdoor recreational programs related to deer hunting, goose and pheasant hunting, fishing and sport clay shooting; travel to statewide events and coordinate the logistics of shooting clinics at statewide locations; serves as State Coordinator for the National Archery Schools Program and operates the Archery tent at the Illinois State Fair and DuQuoin State Fair; acquire and coordinate vendors, media and volunteer staff for special events; track and purchase inventory and become familiar with the purchasing and procurement process.

Essential Functions

  • Under administrative direction, organizes, plans, executes, controls, and evaluates statewide departmental programs and special events.
  • Secures and coordinates vendors and volunteer staff for events.
  • Research, track and purchase inventory assets for events.
  • Conduct studies to ensure quality of special events.
  • Acts as a lead worker/coordinator for seasonal staff, volunteers and/or vendors.
  • Assists with other department programs as needed.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of college with courses in journalism, English or public speaking.
  • Requires two years of supervisory experience or three years of professional experience in a public education and information program in a public or private agency.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers one (1) year of professional experience coordinating events and working closely with vendors.
  • Prefers one (1) year of professional experience instructing classes, public speaking and training.
  • Prefers one (1) year of professional experience developing and managing a small agency or company functional program.
  • Prefers one (1) year of experience handling firearms and ammunition.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Requires appropriate, valid driver's license.
  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
  • Requires overtime after hours and on weekends.
  • Requires ability to obtain and maintain a valid FOID card.
  • This position has been found to meet the requirements in section 4A-101 of the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act requiring the occupant/employee to file a Statement of Economic Interest.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position.
