Base pay range

$71,876.00/yr - $104,336.00/yr

What You'll Do

  • Specialize in the management of patients with medical complexity and/or special healthcare needs with a focus on underserved populations with intellectual and developmental disabilities
  • Screen patients during routine oral health recall appointments
  • Review patient health history
  • Perform preventive dental care, including dental prophylaxis, scaling and root planing procedures with or without local anesthetic and modifications to care; obtain and process dental radiography
  • Record evaluation of oral conditions and periodontal charting in the electronic health records to facilitate collaboration with dental residents and dental faculty in patient care and treatment planning
  • Advise and instruct patients on proper dental care and diet for good dental health
  • Room patients scheduled with dental hygiene; clean, disinfect, and arrange independent work area; process, evaluate, and maintain dental hygiene instruments; advise dental assistants of supply needs
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct oral health care to patients by scaling, polishing, flossing, and brushing teeth
  • Evaluate and record oral conditions; complete dental prophylaxis, scaling and root planing procedures with or without local anesthesia; make modifications to care; monitor patients; advise behavior modification including oral anxiolysis and/or medical immobilization
  • Document treatment rendered and facilitate necessary dental treatment in collaboration with dental residents and faculty
  • Provide oral hygiene instruction for patients, family and caregivers on proper dental care and diet
  • Operate with professional judgment and independent decision-making within the scope of responsibilities
  • Participate in meaningful research projects in collaboration with the School of Dentistry and Michigan Medicine
  • May include training as part of a research study team, periodontal charting, oral exams, oral health instruction, and dental prophylaxis

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in a science-related field or related to the duties of the position
  • Graduate from an accredited Dental Hygiene program
  • Passed the National Board of Dental Hygiene exam
  • Valid Registered Dental Hygienist license for the state of Michigan; BLS certification
  • 1 to 2 years of experience in the dental field
  • Knowledge of dental clinic practices and procedures
  • Primary Source Verification required
  • Professional and positive demeanor when interacting with patients, faculty, and staff
  • High standard of personal and professional conduct; strong customer service, interpersonal and communication skills; ability to interact with a diverse population

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position requires moderate standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients.

Work Schedule

This position is 32 hours/week with the intention of eventually becoming full-time.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or remote work modes are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually and may change.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Michigan and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP).
