Location: Hickory, NC

Position: Press Operator

Rate: $26.97/hr + $2/hr shift differential

Shift: Night shift - 12 hours, 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM, 2-2-3 schedule

The Press Operator reports directly to the Plant Superintendent.

Responsibilities

• Meet and exceed machine production goals.
• Take full responsibility for the complete operation and production of the press, including the quality of all printed material.
• Direct and evaluate the press assistant, including ongoing training of the assistant and being able to run the press in the Operator's absence with minimal assistance.
• Set up print jobs, including plates, sleeves, ink match, make-ready, anilox rollers, and film verification.
• Ensure print quality including print position, correct copy, UPC codes, register, and impressions.
• Place roll tickets and weights on each roll; maintain accurate records in the Shop Floor computer.
• Return inks, plates/sleeves, film, and related materials to proper locations with correct identification upon order completion.
• Report damaged or excessively worn plates to the Shift Leader for replacement.
• Demonstrate understanding of setup and use of the web monitoring system.
• Demonstrate understanding of the make-ready process sequence.
• Understand tension controls and how they apply to different substrates.
• Learn to set the proper impression on the plate and anilox and demonstrate this skill.
• Draw finished/concluded bags’ dimensions as required.
• Adjust dot gains and densities based on readings to match proofs.
• Complete basic plate mounting training and understand mounting tapes and procedures as they relate to printing.
• Coordinate with Maintenance on operator-based maintenance requirements for the machines.
• Handle Hazardous Waste according to trained procedures.
• Perform other duties as directed by the Shift Leader or Production Manager.

Qualifications

• Previous printing press experience is required, including:
  • Flexographic printing – printing film and/or paper
  • Multi-colored press operator
  • Web-fed printing machine operator
• Thorough knowledge of company printing procedures and quality standards.
• Technical knowledge of inks, color, and film properties is beneficial.
• Ability to read and interpret work orders, art, and spec sheets.
• Operating knowledge of the specific machine capabilities.
• Must have successfully fulfilled requirements for Press Assistant Levels I and II.
• Technical training and/or equivalent apprenticeship of up to three years as an operator is required to become proficient in most aspects of the job.
