Overview
The Obstetrical Technician provides basic nursing care (personal and restorative care) and functions as a member of the surgical team by assisting and passing instruments during surgical procedures performed in the Labor and Delivery unit. The OB Technician understands the procedures being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. The OB Technician ensures quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintains the sterile field. They assist in the preparation of the room before surgery or delivery and are accountable for all items required for their surgical table, including instrumentation and sutures. The Obstetrical Technician performs routine clerical duties within the unit and works under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.
Responsibilities
- Assist and pass instruments during surgical procedures in the Labor and Delivery unit.
- Maintain the sterile field and ensure quality patient care during operative procedures.
- Prepare the room before surgery or delivery and ensure all items required for the surgical table are available.
- Perform routine clerical duties within the unit as needed.
- Adhere to supervision by the Registered Nurse responsible for patient care management during the shift.
Qualifications
- Education: High School graduate or equivalent required. Successful completion of Surgical Technician program preferred.
- License: N/A
- Certification: Current Surgical Technologist Certification preferred.
- Must complete and maintain BCLS certification upon hire and/or transfer.
- Must have de-escalation training completed by the end of position orientation (90 days) and maintain the appropriate level of de-escalation training.
- Experience: A minimum of one (1) year Surgical Technologist experience preferred.
Reports To
Registered Nurse responsible for patient care management during scheduled shift and the Patient Care Manager on a 24-hour basis.

- Excellent communication, writing, and verbal skills; ability to work under high stress and meet deadlines.
- Attention to detail and ability to multi-task in complex situations; ability to maintain collaborative relationships with SRHS and other organizations.
- Proficient computer skills (keyboard proficiency) and familiarity with MS Outlook and Word; professional etiquette and superior customer service.
- Job requires traveling throughout the SRHS service area and must provide own transportation.
Physical and Mental Demands
Physical Demands: Moderately active; capable of lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling; exposure to body fluids; repetitive motions; good visual and auditory acuity. Ability to be active for extended periods and flexibility to shifts as required.
