Program Director, STEM Careers - University of Chicago

Department: Career Advancement / ESA Deputy Director STEM Programs - Direct Reports

Career Advancement serves a student population of approximately 6,000 arts and sciences undergraduate students, in addition to recent alumni. It provides career development services focusing on pre-professional preparation, experiential education, and access to internships and full-time opportunities. This role will help scale programming and resources to prepare students for successful careers in the physical sciences, build cross-campus partnerships, and maintain employer relationships to enhance career opportunities for STEM students.

Job Summary

The Program Director, STEM Careers will use industry knowledge and program management skills to scale programming and resources for STEM career preparation. Responsibilities include organizing events, developing pre-professional workshops and experiential programs, providing one-on-one advising, and supporting outcomes reporting. The role requires independent work with limited supervision and strong cross-campus collaboration with academic departments and employer partners.

Responsibilities

  • Design programming that supports the professional development of students pursuing careers in the sciences.
  • Assist students with resumes/cover letters, interview preparation, graduate school applications, career guidance, and industry exploration.
  • Manage and execute student-employer and student-alumni engagement opportunities.
  • Maintain data tracking, measure student engagement, and report on outcomes.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with campus partners and registered student organizations (RSOs).
  • Conduct large lectures, hands-on workshops, special events, training programs, and one-on-one career coaching; direct students to additional career resources as needed.
  • Analyze job market trends and student feedback; collaborate with staff and student groups to adapt programs.
  • Perform other related work as needed.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field or related field.

Experience

  • 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline (higher education or STEM-related preferred).

Technical Skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with data analysis tools and other industry-relevant technical skills.

  • Ability to maintain collaborative relationships with diverse groups.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, initiative, ability to work independently and in teams, with flexibility.
  • Customer service orientation, ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Coaching or counseling skills; ability to communicate to large groups and one-on-one with students, faculty, donors, and staff.

Working Conditions

  • Work evenings, some weeknights and weekend days as needed.
  • Occasional travel two to three times per year.
