Nurse Practitioner : Critical Care - CVICU

We are seeking a Nurse Practitioner / Pediatric Hospitalist for our Critical Care Division to function within the Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU). With demonstrated nursing expertise in pediatric cardiovascular intensive care, the Nurse Practitioner will function in an advanced practitioner role as a clinical expert in the management of pediatric cardiac intensive care patients within a family-centered care environment.

Under the direction of the attending CVICU attending and practicing within developed standardized procedures and process protocols, the Nurse Practitioner will evaluate, diagnose and treat cardiac medical patients as well as pre- and post- operative / catheterization cardiac patients. Central to the role, the Nurse Practitioner will assist in developing and implementing plans of care for all patients in the CVICU. The Nurse Practitioner functions in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary cardiac team, while also providing consultation and education to patients and their families.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, diagnose and treat pediatric cardiac medical patients in the CVICU, including pre- and post-operative / catheterization cases, under the direction of the CVICU attending and standardized procedures.
  • Develop and implement plans of care for all patients in the CVICU in collaboration with a multidisciplinary cardiac team.
  • Provide consultation and education to patients and their families, and contribute to family-centered care within the CVICU.

Qualifications

  • California licensed and certified Nurse Practitioner with at least two years of bedside nursing experience in direct pediatric cardiovascular intensive care.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • At least one year of clinical pediatric Nurse Practitioner experience is desired, but not mandatory.

Additional Context

In 2023 CHOC began a collaboration with UCLA Health to enhance access to pediatric cardiac and cardiothoracic care. CHOC earned the Gold Level CAPE Award and Magnet designation for nursing excellence, and the CVICU earned the Beacon Award for Excellence in 2022. CHOC opened a new 24-bed CVICU in February 2025. The role is located in Orange County, California, with favorable climate and access to regional amenities.
