Overview
With general direction from the Shop Supervisor, a Mechanic provides a wide range of technical services on company buses, vans, and automobiles. This is a journeyman position that requires significant technical training and/or experience. Also works under the direction of the Operations Manager.
Responsibilities
- Performs thorough and accurate Preventative Maintenance (PM) inspections.
- Following schedules, completes all required PM maintenance operations including lubrication, fluid changes, brake adjustments, and tire rotation.
- With direction from the Supervisor, performs unscheduled maintenance as needed.
- Performs complex operations including engine, electrical, fuel, brake, and exhaust repairs and field tests. Requires interpreting and working from drawings, specifications and other technical materials.
- Accesses elevated areas as needed using a ladder and other elevation equipment to service roofs and elevated fixtures.
- Operates CDL and Non-CDL vehicles to perform road tests and shuttle in and out of the garage for repairs and maintenance.
- Performs DVIR repairs daily based on fleet needs and driver work orders.
- Assists with starting buses for AM/PM routes and related startup tasks as needed.
- Maintains the ability to stand for long periods while performing medium and heavy-duty motor work.
- Maintains clean and safe shop environment; manages oil reservoirs and coordinates with vendors for disposal when needed.
- Conducts monthly inventory, orders parts using the computer system, and restocks the tool crib.
- Performs emergency roadside services as needed, with potential calls outside regular hours.
- Documents repairs and parts on work orders completely and accurately.
- Ensures tools and work areas are safe, neat, and orderly.
- Familiar with all safety provisions associated with vehicle maintenance.
Qualifications and Essential Abilities
- Knowledge of tools, procedures, technical skills and safety rules used in the maintenance and repair of gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered equipment.
- Written and verbal communication skills and customer service skills are essential; ability to problem-solve.
- Knowledge of Federal and State regulations.
- Operational knowledge of motorized gasoline, diesel and alternative fueled vehicles, and shop equipment and tools.
- Ability to schedule and set priorities for work; inspect equipment and diagnose mechanical defects.
- Propane/gasoline medium-duty truck engine experience preferred; ASE Certification(s) a plus.
- Must be able to lift heavy equipment; operate bench tools and power equipment as required.
- Attend work regularly and pass state and/or federal background checks as required.
- Safety-sensitive role regulated by the DOT; comply with company policies and procedures.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent supplemented by specialized vehicle and equipment repair courses.
- Tech A: At least 5–7 years hands-on experience working on diesel engines with large buses or vehicles; Class 7 Inspection license.
- Tech B: At least 4 years’ experience as a mechanic in automotive, school bus, trucking or heavy equipment environment; Class 7 Inspection license.
- Tech C: At least 2 years’ experience as a mechanic in automotive, school bus, trucking or heavy equipment environment.
Physical Requirements
- Climbing, walking, pushing/pulling, reaching, repetitive motions, sitting, talking, seeing, hearing, stooping/stretching, standing, lifting; ability to perform jobs frequently or occasionally as described.
