Narrative Director for The Walking Dead

to lead storytelling on a major externally developed title set in The Walking Dead universe. As the primary owner of story quality, voice, and cohesion, the Narrative Director will shape the narrative strategy and oversee its execution across all development phases. This is a full-time role during periods of active writing and narrative development, serving as the

partnering closely with a partner-assigned writer/narrative designer and Skybound’s Creative TWD Lead. Reports:

This position will report to the Senior Director, Game Development of Skybound Game Studios. Responsibilities: Lead the

narrative direction and structure

of the project, including lore drops, world events, character arcs, and story tone. Lead the writers' room and partner closely with the external narrative team—including a full-time Writer/Narrative Designer—to shape scripts, dialogue, and narrative design systems. Own creative deliverables from Skybound’s side, including structure, milestones, and collaboration rhythm. Collaborate with Skybound’s

Creative Producer

for TWD, an expert on franchise canon, to ensure all narrative content fits the broader TWD universe and that relevant signoffs are successful. Provide hands-on feedback on character voice, story beats, and implementation—ensuring narrative integration across gameplay, missions, and progression systems. Approve and/or co-author key narrative deliverables in partnership with internal stakeholders and the external development team. Oversee the tone and consistency of in-game lore drops, nonlinear story elements, and environmental storytelling systems. Ensure successful VO, Cinematic, and Localization from the perspective of the Narrative; including advising the VO Director to ensure the results meet Skybound’s narrative standards. Identify gaps in narrative needs for the project and escalate to ensure resolution. Requirements 7+ years of narrative experience in games, with at least one shipped console or PC title in a lead narrative or narrative design role. Experience building and running a writer’s room, with strong team collaboration skills. Deep understanding of worldbuilding, nonlinear storytelling, and environmental narrative structures. Experience writing or directing character-driven content, particularly within pre-established IP. Comfortable giving and receiving feedback from multiple stakeholders (e.g., IP holders, writers, designers). Persuasive communication skills and ability to represent narrative goals to both creative and production leads. Preferred Qualifications Passionate about The Walking Dead universe Background in modular narrative structures. Experience partnering with external development teams on co-funded or co-developed titles. Proficiency in narrative tools (e.g., Articy, Twine, Ink) and understanding of VO and cinematic pipelines. Experience and competency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Final Draft, project management and tracking, and familiarity with modern game engines Strong editing skills with an eye for tone, clarity, and franchise consistency.
