Summary:
The Health Aide is responsible for providing health care, medications, and first aid to sick or injured students. This role maintains student health records, manages immunization compliance, and documents health-related information in the district's student information system. The Health Aide also assists with emergency care, communicates with parents and caregivers, supports school-wide health screenings, and provides general clerical support to the school office.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide first aid and health care to students, including assessing illness or injury severity, monitoring students, and administering technical procedures as needed (e.g., blood glucose testing, injectable epinephrine, hygiene procedures).
Dispense medications, maintain accurate medication logs, ensure proper documentation, and notify parents/caregivers when refills are needed.
Maintain student immunization records, ensure compliance with state requirements, and track students working toward compliance.
Document care, treatments, and daily health visits in individual student files and the district's student information system.
Communicate with parents/caregivers regarding student illness, injury, or special health needs, and prepare students to go home when necessary.
Prepare and maintain health-related reports for school, district, and state requirements; notify staff of students with special health needs.
Support annual student health screenings (vision, hearing, etc.), recruit and train volunteers, make referrals, and track follow-up care.
Maintain a clean, organized, and fully stocked health office; order supplies and prepare health-related materials for school use.
Perform general office tasks as needed, such as answering phones, greeting visitors, copying, typing, and data entry.
Provide updates to the District Nurse on student health concerns, absences, or other relevant issues.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent (required).
Minimum two years' experience in health care, working with children, or clerical/secretarial roles (preferred).
First Aid and CPR certification preferred; required within one month of hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Successful completion of a criminal background check (required).
Strong organizational, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to remain calm and professional in emergencies or stressful situations.
Strong interpersonal skills to effectively interact with students, families, staff, and community members of diverse backgrounds.
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times.
Customer service and public relations skills with a professional demeanor.
Proficiency in personal computers, office software, and common office equipment; ability to learn and use the student information system within two months of hire.
Basic math skills and ability to complete routine calculations.
Bilingual skills may be required or preferred depending on school needs.
Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to district policies and procedures.
Work Environment:
The Health Aide works primarily in a school health office and school building environment. The role requires frequent interaction with students, staff, and families, as well as exposure to childhood illnesses and minor injuries. Duties may involve handling bodily fluids, lifting or assisting students with limited mobility, and responding to emergencies. The position requires the ability to manage frequent interruptions while maintaining focus and professionalism. Occasional travel between school sites may be required.
