Relativity
At Relativity Space, we are trailblazing the future of aerospace by developing advanced rockets to meet current demands and drive future breakthroughs. Our Terran R vehicle is set to deliver customer payloads to orbit, paving the way for scientific and exploratory advancements. But this is just the beginning. By achieving commercial success with the Terran R, we will open new avenues for innovation that extend beyond our current understanding.
Joining Relativity means becoming part of an environment where autonomy, ownership, and impact are integral at every level. Here, you are not just executing tasks; you are tackling unprecedented challenges, contributing to the creation of a rocket, a factory, and a business from the ground up. Whether your background is in propulsion, manufacturing, software, avionics, or corporate functions, you'll work collaboratively across teams, influence key decisions, and witness the results of your efforts rapidly materialize. Relativity fosters a culture where creativity meets technical excellence, and your input is vital in shaping our shared narrative. This is a unique moment to impact the product, process, and culture as we build towards the first Terran R launch in 2026.
About the Team:
The propulsion team plays a critical role at Relativity, focusing on the successful development of rocket engines for the Terran R vehicle. We oversee engine design from conception to launch and reuse, collaborating closely with teams across manufacturing, testing, and integration. As a member of this team, you will be deeply involved in building, testing, and refining our Aeon-R engine systems, progressing them to operational flight.
About the Role:
In this dynamic role, your responsibilities will vary based on your expertise and the needs of the team. Key responsibilities include driving engine system architecture and operational concepts, managing engine interfaces and requirements, and supporting overall engine system development. You’ll also engage in engine analysis, simulation, testing, tool development, and more. You will not only facilitate collaboration with other technical teams, but also apply your deep technical skills to address complex issues and help mentor your team to enhance their expertise.
As a leader, you will guide a team of engineers handling similar responsibilities. This includes providing mentorship, managing projects, setting priorities, communicating with leadership, and offering technical guidance. At Relativity, leaders are expected to be both inspiring people managers and technically proficient contributors. You will dedicate time to support your team’s growth while also contributing to critical technical initiatives. The Aeon R engine offers unique learning opportunities with every test, bringing fresh challenges and insights.
To excel in this role, you should effectively lead collaborative projects and empower your team to achieve their goals with minimal oversight. A self-starter mindset is crucial, as well as a commitment to continuous personal and team improvement, along with a deep respect for your colleagues’ growth. As you rise to meet high expectations, you will gain significant influence within a rapidly growing startup, enjoying professional development in an environment that encourages innovation and responsible risk-taking.
This full-time role is based onsite at our factory in Long Beach, CA, with travel to test and launch sites accounting for approximately 15% of your time. You may occasionally need to adjust your schedule for crucial milestones.
About You:
Bachelor's degree in a relevant science, engineering, technology, or mathematics field
8+ years of engineering experience in complex system development or testing, including at least 2 years directly related to liquid-propellant rocket engines
Experience leading engineering teams
Solid understanding of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics principles
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with fluid components such as valves and instrumentation
Experience with engine subsystems like combustion devices and turbomachinery
Proven track record of delivering on aggressive schedules with innovative solutions
