Job Summary/Basic Function

The School of Music at Middle Tennessee State University invites dynamic and creative musicians and educators with a proven record of excellence as a conductor, classroom instructor, mentor and recruiter to apply for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant or associate professor to serve as the Director of Choral Activities. The start date for the position is August 1, 2026. The Director of Choral Activities will be actively engaged in research and deeply committed to quality instruction and musicianship. The successful candidate will serve as the primary leader in recruitment, artistic direction, and strategic planning for ensemble growth for all MTSU choral ensembles. The successful candidate will lead Schola Cantorum in rehearsal and performance while also preparing undergraduate and graduate courses in conducting, music education, and academic areas based on the candidate's areas of specialization. The director position requires excellent musicianship skills, comprehensive knowledge of standard choral literature with a commitment to the performance of new music, and knowledge of current performance practice, including the incorporation of cross-disciplinary initiatives and commitment to various genres. Responsibilities and Qualifications

The successful candidate must demonstrate knowledge of methods and current developments in choral music as an academic discipline, as well as familiarity with current instructional strategies for the K-12 and collegiate classroom. The ideal candidate will combine traditional musical excellence with innovative approaches to choral education and performance, contributing to MTSU's commitment to comprehensive musical training and research. Required Education: A terminal degree in conducting or music education is required by the appointment date. Required Experience: Three years of full-time teaching at the collegiate level is required. Other Desirables: Applicants with a minimum of three years middle school or high school classroom teaching experience will receive special consideration. Application Instructions
