The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center serves as the primary health care provider for more than 151,000 Veterans in southeast Texas. The incumbent will serve as a staff psychiatrist within the Mental Health Emergency Room Program at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC). At the Houston VA, the mental health team is embedded in the emergency room and collaborates in a consultant role with the ER medical providers. The incumbent will be aligned under the Mental Health Care line. This is a part-time position (20 hours per week). Main shifts available will be for later afternoons, early evenings and overnight. Performs psychiatric evaluations, and treatment of patients with problems of personality, emotional adjustment, or mental illness. Psychiatric medication management Crises management-Medication reconciliation Manage patient admission processing- Promotes, supervises, and/or performs psychotherapy with patients, either through individual sessions or through group therapy sessions. Based on data gathered through assessments, plans an appropriate clinical treatment for individual patients. Develops a comprehensive treatment plan for a wide range of abnormal behaviors. Prepares and presents a formal treatment plan to the multi-disciplinary team. Promotes a psychotherapeutic atmosphere among the professional treatment staff. Over sees the treatment performed by medical students and psychiatry residents and instructs them in the typical patterns of progression of mental illnesses during treatment. Work Schedule:
