POSITION SUMMARY
The Phlebotomist plays a vital role in the healthcare team, responsible for collecting blood specimens from patients with care and precision. In addition to specimen collection, this position includes opportunities to assist the Clinical Laboratory Scientist and support specimen processing. This role fosters excellent public relations by engaging positively with patients, physicians, and hospital staff. The Phlebotomist must ensure high standards of quality, workflow efficiency, and timely results, while adapting to the dynamic environment of Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensure phlebotomy supplies are adequately stocked for all shifts.
Perform clerical duties as required.
Maintain clear and professional communication with coworkers, hospital personnel, and physicians.
Provide scheduled laboratory coverage to guarantee optimal patient care, accommodating last-minute changes as necessary.
Conduct sample collections utilizing standard venipuncture or skin puncture techniques, adhering to established procedures.
Keep an inventory of phlebotomy supplies, reporting and restocking as needed to ensure continuous operation.
Deliver specimens to the laboratory when required.
Perform data entry efficiently, demonstrating proficiency with the Lab Information System (LIS).
Utilize manual backup systems for the LIS when necessary.
Assist customers with inquiries regarding LIS information.
Maintain a clean and organized workspace.
Exhibit proper telephone etiquette consistently.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
A. Education
High School Diploma or equivalent.
B. Qualifications/Experience
Minimum of 6 months of experience in blood specimen collection; 3 years preferred. Internal applicants with a current California Certified Phlebotomy Technician License will also be considered.
C. Special Skills/Knowledge
Proficient in Lab Information Systems and other computer applications.
Possess a current California Certified Phlebotomy Technician License.
Hold a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Health Care Providers from the American Heart Association.
Complete Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Blue Card training within 90 days of hire or upon notification of requirement.
