DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF WORK

Lifeguards are responsible for the constant safety and well-being of all patrons at all times. This position is responsible for the supervision of swimmers and spectators, enforcement of safety protocols, and providing a fun and enjoyable environment for all. Must be able to identify life-threatening situations and act in a level-headed and appropriate manner during all emergencies.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The Essential Job Functions Include

  • Enforcing pool rules/regulations and protecting lives.
  • Patrolling and observing the pool area and rescuing swimmers in distress.
  • Administering First Aid and/or CPR as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness of pool, pool deck, pool equipment, locker rooms, showers, and common areas at all times.
  • Maintain constant surveillance of patrons in the facility.
  • Act immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
  • Provide emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
  • Present a professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintain a high standard of customer service.
  • Attend mandatory meetings and training sessions as scheduled.
  • All other duties as assigned and appropriate.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be 17 years old or older at time of application.
  • Ability to work independently and possess energy and enthusiasm.
  • Ability to positively interact with the general public.
  • Must have knowledge of life saving and first aid methods and techniques.
  • Must know how to operate modern life saving equipment.
  • Must have current and valid lifeguard/first aid certificate and CPR/AED certificate OR obtain said certificates within 90 days of hire.
  • Water Safety Instructor’s Certificate (optional/recommended).
  • Swimming proficiency as it pertains to the standards and training of the American Red Cross.

Note

The City will reimburse new year-round part-time lifeguards, lifeguard instructors, and chief guards, non-seasonal, for their certification(s) as long as they remain employed with the City for a period of eight (8) months after obtaining the certification(s). The certification(s) that will be reimbursed are the following: Lifeguard, Lifeguard Instructor, AFO/CPO, CPR/AED, Water Safety Instructor (WSI), Bloodborne Pathogen, Oxygen Administration, Water Aerobics (Water Fitness), Arthritis, and First Aid.

Employees must seek and obtain approval, via a written memorandum, from their immediate supervisor and the Director of Parks and Recreation prior to obtaining additional certification(s).

If the employee resigned within eight (8) months after their certification(s)/re-certification(s) date, they shall pay the City back the cost for the certification/re-certification(s) at the time of resignation. The employee will execute an agreement to this effect.
