About The Role Scientific American is seeking a Data Editor to help us produce award-winning investigative journalism, develop and launch new lists and rankings, and contribute data to stories across our newsroom. They will lead the production and growth of new franchise projects from their conception to their publication, identify opportunities for the smart use of data, and help evaluate strategic partnerships and tools. We're looking for someone with strong data analysis skills and incredible instincts for finding stories and developing smart methodologies. They will work closely with reporters and editors across the newsroom who have expertise in various scientific disciplines, as well as our graphics, product and design departments. This role is based in our New York or Washington, D.C. offices on a hybrid working model. Role Responsibilities: Develop methodologies and code for statistical analyses of large and complex datasets Identify important stories that can be told with the use of data, and execute them flawlessly Collaborate with reporters and editors across the newsroom, helping them to incorporate data into their stories Bring your data analysis skills to bear on stories with a variety of deadlines, ranging from breaking news to in-depth investigations Work closely with colleagues on all aspects of the editorial process Experience, Skills & Qualifications: At least 5 years of experience in a newsroom producing data-driven journalism Strong writing and reporting skills and an uncanny ability to find interesting topics Impeccable project management skills and a track record of producing complex stories A desire to innovate experiment, and create new things Desirable qualifications include experience in science, technology or health journalism, a master’s degree in journalism, particularly with an emphasis on data journalism, an undergraduate or graduate degree in a STEM field, and a knowledge of and enthusiasm for all kinds of science.
