Responsibilities

• Assist the dentist during a variety of treatment procedures
• Take and develop dental radiographs (x-rays)
• Prepare examination and surgical rooms by sterilizing instruments and moving equipment into place
• Prevent the spread of infection and maintain a surgically clean work environment
• Help patients feel comfortable before, during and after dental treatment
• Provide patients with instructions for oral care following treatment
• Teach patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies (tooth brushing, flossing, nutritional counseling)
• Take impressions of patients\' teeth for study casts (models of teeth)
• Create, send, and track lab cases
• Monitor, order, and maintain budget for dental supplies
• Perform office management tasks using a personal computer
• Update and maintain client dental records/charts
• Maintain equipment and coordinate necessary repairs
• Ask about the patient\'s medical history and take blood pressure and pulse as needed
• Provide support to dentists and other staff as needed
• Maintain OSHA and HIPAA compliance

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Basic Life Support Certification required
• State Dental Assistant license required

Working conditions

Dental practices run at a fast pace and dental assistants will be required to keep up with the flow of doctors and patients.
