As part of the Communications Products Hardware Engineering Department, you will help deliver secure communication equipment across land, air, sea, and space.
We are seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to lead the design and development of complex digital hardware used in high-performance communication products essential to national defense, such as software-defined radios and data links for ground, airborne, and space applications. This position is located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

What YOU Will Do
Lead and perform circuit card design lifecycle activities including requirements capture, schematic capture, design documentation, signal integrity analysis, board stackup and routing instructions, coordination and review of printed wiring board layout, creation of test plans, root cause analysis, and integration. Designs will include FPGA, processors, and DDR memory components, and interfaces such as Ethernet, I2C, SPI, and UART. Generate PWB layout constraint guidelines and oversee routing, layout, fabrication, and assembly of complex designs.
Serve as a hands-on technical authority to design and optimize complex electrical systems, addressing signal integrity (SI) and power integrity (PI) to ensure reliable performance.
Collaborate with a multi-discipline engineering team to develop hardware designs that meet system performance and operational specifications.
Prepare and present project and technical information to technical staff, program leadership, management, and customers. Produce technical documentation including specifications, hardware design documents, and test plans.
Test and troubleshoot electronic circuitry. Support lab design verification testing for circuit card assemblies.
Perform trade studies and select components to meet requirements. Support system architecture discussions as needed.
Mentor others in technical growth and may lead small teams to success with schedule, budget, and technical execution.

Qualifications You Must Have
Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 8 years of relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree with minimum 5 years of experience.
At least 5+ years of experience with all aspects of circuit card design from concept through delivery to higher-level assemblies.
At least 5+ years experience with schematic capture and generating PWB layout constraint guidelines, and overseeing routing and layout. Familiarity with tools such as Mentor Graphics xDxDesigner/xDxDesigner, Xpedition, Altium, Cadence Allegro, EAGLE, KiCAD, etc.
At least 3+ years as a hardware technical lead on circuit card developments (processors, FPGAs, memory, interfaces). At least 2+ years SI/PI experience with pre- and post-layout simulations for high-speed interfaces (PCIe, DDR, high-speed Ethernet).
Hands-on experience testing circuit card assemblies and performing design verification activities.
Qualifications We Prefer
Ability to prepare bids and proposals.
Project management experience using Earned Value Management System (EVMS); experience with cost, schedule, and risk management for hardware development.
Experience with Agile for Hardware Development, including planning, tracking, and managing hardware projects in JIRA.
Familiarity with latest high-speed digital design trends, microprocessors, memory, FPGA and interface protocols.
Experience with signal integrity and timing analyses for robust circuit card designs.
